The Costa Brava/Catalonia region
Catalonia, or perhaps better known as the Catalunya region, is the area of northern Spain bordering the Mediterranean just to the south of the French border.
This ancient kingdom once extended from near Narbonne in France down to south of Barcelona and eastwards to include the Balearic Islands. The area was later divided between France and Spain but even today the area remains fiercely Catalan, as can be seen by the numerous red and yellow striped flags displayed and the rather exceptional cuisine, demonstrated best perhaps by Ferran Adria of Es Bulli fame.
To the holidaymaker it is the Costa Brava, known throughout the world for its scenic beauty, aquamarine seas and yellow sandy beaches. Inland the area is mainly agricultural set against a backdrop of the ever present Pyrenean Mountains in the distance. The main crops are rice and fruit, together with the large selection of fish present a varied and healthy diet.
Perhaps Catalunya greatest gifts to the world have been its artists, Joan Miró and Salvador Dali are both from this region, and today’s artists, the chefs of Catalunya lead the world with their own inimitable styles.
The most attractive area of the coast is the small area around Palafrugell, which stretches from Pals and Begur to the north, south through Aguablava, Tamariu, Llafranc, and Calella de Palafrugell to the gardens of Cap Roig. This area abounds with beautiful bays, coves and headlands, with golden sandy beaches, sparkling seas and glistening white villages reflecting in the sun.
Places to visit include Pals, the walled medieval city; Bisbal famed for its market and ceramics; Torroella de Montgri with its Gothic palaces, courtyards and narrow streets that nestle beneath the Castell de Montgri dating from 1294 and the spectacular gardens of Cap Roig.
Llafranc area
Llafranc is a charming small resort with a long golden sandy beach backed by a promenade, that is set on a sparkling bay between its fishing and pleasure port, and a majestic tree clad hillside. It is popular with families, beach lovers and is renowned for its excellent fish restaurants which are set on the promenade overlooking the sea. Two of our favourites is the restaurant at the Hotel Llevant and the the restaurant in the Hotel Casa Mar.
Holidays in Llafranc are relaxed, lunches are long and the evenings are late but quiet. The paseo is the prelude to the evening meal with longer walks along the coast for the more serious, one of the most popular is around the nearby headland to the next resort, Calella de Palafrugell, or up to the lighthouse, El Far for amazing views over the bay.
There are many local festivals in the surrounding towns and villages - in late May Palafrugell holds its Spring festival, the Caroussel Costa Brava; on 23/24 June the Festa de St John is marked all over the region with bonfires and firework parties; in July and August Llafranc and nearby Calella de Plafrugell hold their Cantada d' Havaneres musical festivals that involve the singing of local sea shanties on the beach.

Just a short thankyou note for your assistance with the use of your apartment in Llafranc we had a really lovely time and the apartment was really nice. For a first time in Spain it was a top spot to stay. Trouble is we are now back in the UK and it's raining outside, still can't have it all nice.
