The Upper Carniola Region
Slovenia, wedged between Austria and Italy, has always been proud of its unique heritage. The capital, Ljubljana, is a perfect example of this blend of German, Mediterranean, and Slovenian culture. The old town is a blend of Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings, watched over by a medieval castle.
Explore Ljubljana and Central Slovenia, either on an organized tour or on your own. Practically anywhere in the region there is something unique and picturesque to be found. Ljubljana, often compared to Prague due to its stunning architectural beauty, is still considered to be a hidden gem of Europe. The region is marked by picturesque castles and mansions, old homesteads, village churches, remarkable for their wealth of artistic treasures, and countless natural sights.
There are numerous beautiful castles, mansions and palaces in Ljubljana and in the Central Slovenia region. The most famous among these are for the most part renovated and open to the public.
The river Ljubljanica, with its interesting bridges and picturesque old city centre embankments, is one of Ljubljana's most notable landmarks.
The famous architect Jože Plecnik (1872-1957) tried to model Ljubljana on ancient Athens. The multitude of his creations in the city, referred to as a whole as "Plecnik's Ljubljana", is considered to be one of the 20th century's most important total works of art.

"Spacious, well-equipped, great location, great hosts!"
We spent nearly 2 weeks in April 2014 at the Gap Apartment. The apartment is very spacious, well-equipped, and just a couple of blocks to the main market square (where in addition to the daily produce and other vendors, there is also a 24-hour mlekomat, a milk vending machine stocked with ice cold, fresh, raw, unskimmed milk from nearby farms - delicious!). It was the perfect amount of space for my husband and I. It even has a small balcony where you can sit and have breakfast on nice days (there is also a small bakery on the ground level of the building). Our host, Petra, was very gracious and concerned with making sure our questions were answered and we had everything we needed. She was also very flexible when we changed our plans and asked to stay an extra day.
If you have a car, the parking garage is just on the next street down and over about a block, and is very secure (70 EUR a week as of the date of our stay, so factor that into your expenses). The parking garage is also in the basement of a shopping center with a Spar and a dm, so it's also convenient for picking up groceries and supplies.
One of the things I loved most about this apartment was the abundant storage cube/shelf space so we could truly unpack from our suitcases and have everything easily accessible. The water pressure was great, and the water was always instantly very hot. The internet connection was very fast. The kitchen has all the basics you would need, though the refrigerator has no freezer section (which we discovered after we brought back ice cream), and the washing machine was new and worked well. The only negative was that the couch is not very comfortable, but then, you're not there to sit and watch TV! The apartment building has a small elevator, but the apartment is just one floor up so it's easy enough to take the stairs.
All in all, we loved our choice, and would highly recommend it to anyone for their visit to beautiful Ljubljana.

"We loved Ljubljana!"
This appartment is well located and a very short walk to the city centre. There is a bus which takes you into the town from the airport and again the appartment is only a 10-15 minute walk from there. We found both Petra and her husband to be very friendly and accommodating, more especially because our flight in was delayed and our flight out was not until the afternoon. They were very flexible and understanding.
The appartment itself is well decorated and contains all you need for a base to explore the city and area. There are shops nearby and the appartment comfortably sleeps four.
I would definitely recommend this property and as and when I return to see more of Slovenia, I will be booking up again! :-)

Really great apartment, completly equiped (full kitchen in terms of furniture and electric utilities, large bed, sofa, tv, wc...) and close to the city center. The owners are nice and always ready to help you as soon as you have a problem.
It is the best place for a couple that want to enjoy and stay for a week in this lovely city.

"Light, bright, excellent location and very comfortable"
Comfortable first floor studio apartment (there was a lift but we did not use it). It was light and cool even in 30+ temperature. Short walk from the fruit and veg market and the old town. Bakery and very friendly cafe below. The kitchen was small and there was no oven or grill but we cooked most nights without problems. There was a small balcony, not really room for more than 2 people but it caught the breeze which was lovely in the heat and go the morning and evening sunshine. The shower was powerful with plenty of hot water. It was hot so we didn't turn on the heating. In Ljubljana the shops, even Spar, and the markets are shut on Sunday (also some of them Saturday afternoons too) so you may need to eat out if you arrive as we did on Saturday evening. There is a small shop further along the street that seemed to be open till 9:30 most nights which was a lifeline on our arrival. You can get milk from a slot machine in the market square and Petra kindly provided teabags. I also recommend the "Boris BIke" scheme. It costs 1 euro for a week and you can borrow a bike as many times as you like for up to an hour for free. Much cheaper than the London scheme.
