The Northern England / Yorkshire / Merseyside region

As a city, Liverpool is diverse, energetic and exciting: from celebrating Liverpool's 800th birthday in 2007 to being the European Capital of Culture this year; football to festivals; music to maritime; clubs to cuisine. We really think there's something for everyone here!

Liverpool is the centre of a dynamic area containing seaside resorts, breathtaking landscapes, vibrant towns and villages with a host of historic places and stories. What's more it's all joined together by a comprehensive network of road, rail and ferry links that makes destinations a joy to travel to.

Just a short drive from Liverpool is the classic seaside resort of Southport, with its award-winning family beaches and superb shopping, as well as a fantastic annual line-up of events that can't fail to keep you entertained.

Just over the water from Liverpool is the Wirral peninsula. Surrounded by the River Mersey, River Dee and the Irish Sea, its bursting with an array of coastal and countryside attractions, and it's unique coastline gives you the perfect opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Just eight miles from the centre of Liverpool, Knowsley is rich in exciting family days out. Famous for its safari park, it's fitting that the borough is best known for its wildlife, as it's one of the greenest places in the UK.

Manchester is only a 45 minutes drive from Liverpool and easily accessible by a direct rail link. Manchester is a city that combines old and new, that is steeped in history yet modern at every turn. It's a cultural Mecca with an exciting mix of the high-brow, the cutting-edge and the mainstream.

Liverpool / Liverpool Docklands area

Our city's areas of interest extend far beyond the World Heritage Site. In and around Liverpool, attractions to satisfy the mind are always within reach, with maginificent architecture and cultural wonders filling the metropolis as well as the countryside and seafront.

Liverpool boasts two cathedrals which are major attractions in their own right. The Anglican Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral are fine examples of internationally recognised architecture.

Many gems of the National Museums Liverpool fall within the heritage site. The refurbished World Museum Liverpool and Walker Art Gallery are housed in this part of town, while the Tate Liverpool and Merseyside Maritime Museum have their homes on the waterfront, at the Albert Dock, alongside the not to be missed Beatles Story. Check out artinliverpool.com for listings of Arts & Culture events in the area.

If you're looking for theatres in Liverpool, choose from the Everyman and Playhouse, Unity and Empire theatres for a range of contemporary, classic and touring productions.

Apart from Liverpool having the country's most successful football club, hosting the world's most famous steeplechase and being at the heart of England's Golf Coast, with no fewer than three Royal courses.

"Just thought I'd drop you a line to say how impressed we were with your apartment. Between the 4 of us it was really good value and much higher quality than a hotel of comparible price. Would not hesitate to recommend to friends!" - Chris Middleton, Belfast, N. Ireland
