About this location
The Sardinia region
With 55 kilometres of glorious coastline along Sardinia's northern shore, Costa Smerelda (or Emerald Coast) was created as a getaway for the rich and famous by Prince Karin Aga Khan IV in the early 1960s.
Sailing, waterskiing, scuba diving, golfing, shopping, fine dining and partying are some of the area's best activities.
Hotel prices can be exorbitant, but that's no problem for the area's wealthy visitors, even less so since many arrive in their own private yachts. Porto Cervo is the main town.
Sardinia is not only the playground for the rich and famous. It also offers some of the best beaches and secluded coves in the Mediterranean. Costa Smeralda is 55 kilometres long and features 80 bays with pinkish white swimming beaches. Many of the idyllic, remote bays are best reached by boat, although of course there are plenty of pristine beaches that are also accessible by car.
Ensconced in the unspoiled wilderness of northern Sardinia's coast is Liscia di Vacca, with its captivating and unique panoramic view of the national park located on the islands of Maddalena and Caprera. Liscia di Vacca, which is part of Porto Cervo, features a small but enchanting stretch of sandy beach.
The alluring arcipelago La Maddalena consists of seven large and twenty smaller islands all of which have been made a national park owing to their unique wildlife and vegetation. Although the ferry from Palau takes visitors to the largest of La Maddalena's islands, this island paradise, with its remote and unspoiled bays, is best explored in a rented boat. Visitors who are having a lucky day might catch a tantalizing glimpse of dolphins frolicking in the crystal clear water.
Liscia di Vacca
The villa is situated on the hills of Porto Cervo, just a few minutes on foot from Porto Cervo's famous boutiques and restaurants.
In less than ten minutes by car, you can reach the stunning beaches of the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast), possible the beast beaches in the Mediterranean.
Porto Rotondo (00 39 0789 35280; closed on Mondays in winter). Of the top-range restaurants, this is the best. It is elegant without being flashy, and a good choice for a romantic dinner. Fresh fish, seafood, game and vegetables star in dishes such as angler fish with bottarga (grey mullet roe), lemon and herbs.
(00 39 0789 708 045; open April to October). This has a view over the Maddalena archipelago and an excellent seafood menu prepared by Paolo D'Amore, whose brother Beniamino manages the front of house. Try the John Dory with tomatoes, capers and thyme and the squid stuffed with Batavian endive.
SOLE E MARE
Offers alfresco pizza and pasta in the main square of Baja Sardinia, Porto Cervo.
for traditional 'gelati'. In Porto Cervo, Via Sa Conca 36.
