The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region
Boasting springtime temperatures during the winter and cool summers freshened by a breeze blowing in from the Atlantic, Costa de Lisboa, on the southwestern coast, offers a rich and impressively integrated diversity. The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of History. The Alfama is one of the oldest quarters in Lisboa. Since it largely survived the earthquake of 1755, the area still retains much of its original layout. Adjacent to the Alfama are the likewise old quarters of Castelo and Mouraria, on the western and northern slopes of the hill that is crowned by St. George's Castle. Every year in June, the streets of all three quarters come alive with the feasts in honour of the popular saints. The Graça quarter and the churches of São Vicente de Fora and Santa Engrácia are within walking distance of this area. Radiant skies brighten the monumental city, with its typical tile covered building facades and narrow Medieval streets, where one can hear the fado being played and sung at night. But Lisbon is also the stage for popular festivities, the place for exquisite shopping, exciting nightlife, and interesting museums, a place from where motorways branch off in different directions.
Lisbon / Alfama area
On one of Lisbon’s seven hills lies Alfama, the oldest part of the city, where narrow, winding streets crowd down to the river amidst a jumble of houses. Most buildings in Alfama are of Moorish origin, based on a heritage of 433 years of occupation in the 8th century. But Alfama is more than just old houses and winding streets. Alfama is the warmth of its inhabitants. Poets, writers, musicians, artists and intellectuals make this colourful quarter special and typically representative of old Lisbon. Although Lisbon has grown into a modern European capital, with fancy cars, efficient subways, trendy fashionable and expensive boutiques and all the conveniences, Alfama has retained its unique character. There, people still take the time to say hello to each other. Life has a slower, more pleasant pace. Grandmothers crochet quilts for their grandchildren, people stroll along the narrow streets and stop for a bica (a Portuguese espresso) and read the paper, or simply choose fresh fruits and vegetables from the local market or greengrocer. Places not to be missed out: Bica do Sapato Restaurant and Lux Bar/Disco. In terms of places to visit: the Military and the Fado Museums, apart from several other Ar Galeries, Shops and of course the famous Tascas (typical small restaurants serving Portuguese food at very cheap prices).
How to get there
If you are flying from the UK, the cheapest option is to book a flight with a low cost company like www.easyjet.com. They have several direct flights to Lisbon from all over the UK. To get out of Lisbon airport the best option is to take a Taxi that will take straight to our apartment. Once settled in you can either walk - there is plenty to see and do - or use the various public transports - bus, electric car or the tube.
