The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region
Whether beach bunny, or city slicker you could do far worse than choose to rent an apartment in the Costa de Lisboa region. Forming Portugal’s south-western coast, the area is blessed with temperate winters and summers that aren’t overbearingly hot.
Some 15km from Lisbon, you’ll find the coastal resort of Estoril (a perfect day trip for those renting apartments in Lisbon). As well as golden sands, Estoril is home to a casino, remains of Roman mansions and a motorsports circuit (the Estoril Circuit). Talk about ticking all the boxes!
If you need to take things down a gear or two, head out to Sintra. Here you’ll discover 19th century Romantic architecture, manor houses, a ruined monastery and royal retreats. Why not take a horse-drawn carriage ride? If you need to stretch your legs, try the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which includes the Sintra Mountains and lush, wooded areas.
A little further afield lies the Mafra Palace and Convent, an awe-inspiring pile of bricks to say the least. This Baroque and Neoclassical complex is one of the largest 18th century buildings in Europe and is danger of dwarfing the town!
These are but some of the attractions the Costa de Lisboa has on offer. Beach, mountains, history, architecture and modern day fun. Who could ask for more?
And then, of course, there’s the city of Lisbon itself...
The Lisbon / Central Lisbon area
Lusitania One is nestled in the heart of Lisbon’s Old Town. The ideal spot for soaking up Lisbon life, the apartment is just a hop, skip and a jump from the Praça da Figueira square, where you can enjoy a spot of people watching from a cafe terrace. This is where you’ll find the nearest Metro station, too.
If a spot of fine architecture floats your boat, you’re in luck. Just a five minute walk from the apartment is the Castelo São Jorge. This imposing, Moorish castle overlooks the city from its hilltop vantage point. And don’t miss the São Cristóvão Church and the ruins of the Carmo Convent, which was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon.
If Lisbon’s hills get a bit too much, hop aboard the Santa Justa Elevador. This lift connects some of the upper and lower streets of the city. There are also funicular railways to give you a leg up.
Take your seat on a Lisbon river cruise along the mighty river Tagus, or join a walking tour. You can always go it alone and wander through the city’s cobbled streets on foot, discovering all its hidden corners at your own pace. You can also hire bikes if you prefer life on two wheels.
Once the sun goes down, Lisbon comes into its own. It’s just a short walk to the Bairro Alto, the city’s cultural and bohemian hub. If you’ve packed your dancing shoes, there are plenty of bars and discos open well into the morning. But be sure to experience Fado, Portugal’s traditional folk music, at one of the local establishments. For something more sedate, there are restaurants to cater to all tastes.
Family-friendly activities include the Lisbon Oceanarium, city zoo, countless parks and gardens, swings, slides and more in the Monsanto forest, the planetarium and museums galore.
Portugal is renowned for its golf courses, and Lisbon is no exception. Perfect that swing and tee off at one of the courses around the city and nearby.

This is the first time I have booked a holiday apartment over the internet and I am glad to report everything went very smoothly. The owner Isabel was extremely helpful, replies to any queries were swift and detailed and all the information you need about the apartment, the area, how to get there from the airport, etc. was sent through at the time of booking. The apartment itself was lovely. Well looked after, clean, tidy and kitted out with almost everything you need. We stayed for 2 weeks so having a washing machine was very handy. By pure chance we picked a great time for a visit – in June there are countless street parties and other festivities. It's a really lively area and couldn't be better placed – 5 minutes walk into the city centre and right within the heart of the old town neighbourhoods. Very close to the castle too. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone – particularly for couples I would say it's ideal. The apartment is a perfect base to explore the city from and there's so much to do here – we found even 2 weeks was not enough. We found it to be a much better (and cheaper) option than staying in a hotel - you can come and go as you want, eat when you want, prepare food at home so you don't always have to eat out – it also gives you a sense of what it might actually be like to live in Lisbon. The owners were very attentive and gave us a call when we arrived and departed to make sure everything was okay. The deposit was returned swiftly and with no fuss. We really can't recommend it highly enough. |

We spent a wonderful long weekend in Lisbon, coming back to the apartment felt like coming home, very welcoming. The location is great, far enough away from the main tourist drag to experience local Lisbon life but close enough to see the sights. There are lots of local bars and restaurants to get acquainted with the locals and try some home cooked meals. I really enjoyed walking down to the local cafe in the morning for an espresso, they make a mean coffee to get you moving in the morning, you can pay extra to sit down at a table and a bit less if you turn up with your own cup and have it take away! The apartment is clean, tidy, well furnished and feels like coming home at the end of each days exploring the winding streets around the castle. We really did feel that we picked a winner in the apartment and would love to go back, this time as a young family, taking an under two year old. We received a very detailed pack of information from the landlord about the apartment and the local attractions. We would recommend the apartment to anyone thinking of going to Lisbon. |

Enjoyed our stay in this apartment. We were 'taken for a ride' by taxi driver who charged us E25 from the airport who claimed not be able to find the place. We were wiser on our way back to the airport. Well postioned for getting around without a car and a good 'local' neighbourhood. But there are a good many steps to get up to the street where the apartment is situated. The weather was great at the end of October. My only complaint is that the refund was not returned after a week and after contacting the owner she promised to send me a cheque as she said there was a problem with PayPal. That was six weeks ago and I am still waiting and unable to contact her on the mobile number I had. We are a retired couple and left the apartment clean and tidy with no breakages of damage. I regret having to add a negative note to an otherwise very good holiday Response: Respond to a Review This matter has now been resolved with the guest. However, to clarify: the deposit was posted back in good time following the initial PayPal problems, but unfortunately was never received by the guest due to problems with the postal system. The owner also had to travel at short notice and was unable to access emails or use her phone when away. Both parties have since been in contact and have settled any dispute amicably. With regards to the steps leading up to the apartment, this is made clear in the advert. All potential guests are advised to check the suitability of the apartment with the owner before booking. |
