The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region

Welcome to Lisbon (Lisboa) the capital of Portugal. This city used to be the centre of one of the biggest empires of all time, with colonies in America, Asia and Africa.

Portugal is a small country on the west of the Iberian peninsula. It has more than 800 km of Atlantic Coast and it’s the most western country in mainland Europe. Lisbon has many historical buildings and monuments.

Lisbon / Lisbon City Centre area

The "Praça dos Restauradores" is located North from the Rossio. The Obelisk and the sculpture commemorate the 1640 restoration of Portugal’s Independence from Spain.

Why not enjoy the most famous view of Lisbon from the "Santa Justa" Elevator constructed by Effel - a Lisbon City Tour wouldn’t be complete without it.
At the top there’s a restaurant and the most beautiful views of the Low District. You can also see the "Castelo de San Jorge", a restored, luxurious Castle, which offers spectacular views of Lisbon and the sea. The Castle was constructed over the Roman ruins in 1147 and was the royal family’s palace from the 14th to the 16th century. One of the main samples of the Manueline Style is this construction, the "Mosteiro dos Jeronimos". The other main Manueline sample, the "Torre de Belem", will be one for next years visit. Here you can also eat the famous 'pasteis de belem' typically Portuguese sweet cake!!

Portugal is famous for its seafood cuisine. The most typical course in Lisbon is the "bacalhau cozido com grão e batatas" (cod with chick peas and boiled potatoes). If you are travelling on a low budget, you’ll find many restaurants with the "Prato do dia" (a menu) for 6 Euro, or less.

The 1998 Expo, which took place from May to September 1998, prompted a major city renewal. The decaying industrial district, where we are right now, was transformed into a beautiful waterfront.
why not try a nice day trip is Sintra, declared world heritage by UNESCO, and a 19th century aristocrats meeting place. this truly is one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal.

Lisbon has a vibrant cultural life. The city’s trademark is the "Fado", a nostalgic and melancholic art, that combines elements of narrative poetry and singing. Fadistas sing about faded glory and past romances. In the High district (Bairro Alto, at our back) you’ll find many Fado joints.
