Surroundings
To set forth on a discovery of Lisbon, there is no better place to begin: the tram a few steps away, international brand shops at Chiado and the more daring fashions in Bairro Alto, where you also have the trendiest restaurants of Lisbon. Bica neighbourhood, close by, is becoming a night haven for artists and intellectuals. But this does not destroy the calm and charm of Rua das Chagas. For theatre and opera lovers there are three theatre houses at a five minute distance, S. Carlos, S. Luiz and Trindade Theatres.
Chiado is where Lisbon's history and urbanity meet. This tourist area of the capital begins at the Brasileira café, on Rua Garrett. Opened in 1905. It´s one of Lisbon's postcards. On the side walk café you will find the different urban tribes and a statue of poet Fernando Pessoa, who offers his lap for tourist photos.
Next to it, two churches remind the vanished towers of Santa Catarina Gate. The Church of Loreto, built in 1528 by Italians living in Lisbon, was partially destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, but later rebuilt and one of the places to visit on Chiado. The Church of Encarnação, inaugurated in 1708, was also hit in 1755 and rebuilt later. But Chiado has more than just two churches to see.
Luís de Camões square, which any Lisboner will call Largo Camões, is not just a passing place. Sit on the steps of the poet's monument and enjoy the bustle that Chiado has.
But do not leave Chiado without inquiring about the theatres. São Luiz Municipal Theatre was one of Lisbon's first cinemas. Today it is a municipal theatre with a rich and varied programming. Also glimpse the Teatro Trindade and the S. Carlos Opera House.
This is one of the city´s best shopping areas. You will find international brand shops (Hermès and Hugo Boss, for example) and great Portuguese designers like José António Tenente (Tv. Carmo, 8) StoryTailors (Cç. Do Ferragial, 8) or Atelier Alves/Gonçalves (Tv. Guilherme Cossul, 16).
It is not difficult to come across public figures, mainly artists. There are several art schools in the area, like the Fine Arts Faculty. Even if you are not an expert, venture into the Chiado Museum - National Museum of Contemporary Art (Rua Serpa Pinto, 4) besides well-cared exhibitions, it has a pleasant patio to have lunch or simply sip a coffee. There is also a big offer for meals: Café Royale, New Wok and Kaffee Hause are excellent choices.
Walk the streets with care, the movement on the sidewalks is always heavy and the trams are constantly passing.

The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region
Lisbon is a place that never grows dull: the better you know the city, the deeper you immerse yourself in the rich ambience of the Portuguese capital. But it's not just the city that's of interest: the surrounding area boasts other first-rate destinations, such as Cascais and Estoril, erstwhile havens for aristocratic European exiles. Near the mouth of the Tagus, the coastal road known as the Estrada Marginal tacks back and forth across the train tracks, zigzagging between pine forest and flower-filled fields from Lisbon to Estoril and Cascais. As you follow the road, you get a fine view of luxury villas and mansions built on the shores of the Atlantic, of fishermen trying their luck among the rocks, and of old defensive walls and forts built to protect Lisbon from attack from the sea. There's Sao Bruno, the Forte da Giribita, das Maias and, the most impressive of all, Sao Juliao, looking out over the rocks of the beach at Carcavelos and across to where the lone tower of the fortified lighthouse the Torre do Bugio rises proud on its small circular island midway across the estuary. ??
The Lisbon / Alfama area
"Bairro Alto" is known as one of the most attractive and picturesque areas of the Lisbon’s city center. At night, this 17th century colorful district is transformed into the city's vibrant nightlife quarter. The main streets and narrow passageways are bustling with activity of dozens of excellent traditional restaurants, «fado singing houses», cafés, and a multitude of sleek clubs and bars that stay open until late. In recent years, «Bairro Alto» is also an alternative shopping destination, for those looking for trendy design shops, art galleries and bookshops. Bairro Alto, one of the Lisbon hippest and coolest place. There are several buses and trams, and subway, 5 minutes away, although one can easily walk to the main points of the city. Two minutes walking is the heart of the glamorous and cosmopolitan city can still be felt in the Chiado, a place where the "new" and "old" live in harmony. Characterized by casual-chic atmosphere, with streets full of shops, fine restaurants, beautiful cobblestone, beautiful churches and timeless cafes, Chiado makes any visitor feel real Lisbon.
