The Estremadura region
The beautiful town of Sintra with it's stunning castles and gardens is easily accessible by train as are Cascais and Estoril with their beaches, restaurants, shopping and a casino.
Across the river, 50 miles of sandy beaches stretch south from Costa da Caparica.
Lisbon offers a great mix of historic neighbourhoods with narrow cobbled streets, elegant avenues and cutting edge modern architecture, traditional and modern restaurants, vibrant nightlife, museums and art galleries. There really is something for everyone and all this in a sub-tropical climate.
We recommend the following, all of which are easily accessible from the house on foot:
The Bairro Alto - Famous for nightlife. Narrow cobbled streets full of restaurants, bars and shops
Chiado - Shopping, cafés and restaurants
The Baixa - elegant squares, shopping, restaurants and cafés
Avenida da Liberdade - Lisbon's main Avenue. Shopping and cafés
The Parliament and Rua São Bento - Antique shops and restaurants and the house of Amália Rodrigues, the best loved Fado singer, which is now a museum.
Praça das Flores - a typical Lisbon garden square with café and restaurants
Principe Real - Another garden square, more restaurants and the Botanical Gardens
Basilica da Estrela - Lisbon's most impressive church and nearby gardens
Using trams, buses, the Metro or cheap taxis you also have:
Belém - a UNESCO World Heritage site with the Jerónimos monastery, Belém Tower and Monument to the Discoveries
Docas- A marina with bars and restaurants. Great for lunch or a big night out.
Alfama - Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood with Castelo São Jorge, a Moorish castle with fantastic views of the city . Get there by tram.
Parque das Nações (the former Expo '98 site) with ultra modern architecture, shopping, riverside walks, restaurants and bars and a new Casino.

"Beautiful and great location"
Strengths: - Beautifully furnished and very spacious house. - Super convenient location so close to Barrio Alto - Very good suggestions provided by the owners - Very good quality-price ratio Only improvement area: - Slightly cold and humid - felt especially in the blankets on our day of arrival, probably for having been washed recently

"A charming modern conversion of an old dwelling in central 'old Lisbon'."
A surprising stylish and modern conversion of a tiny 18thC dwelling (behind a large church), where the raised marble-floored entrance and reception space leads down to a cool, excavated basement containing bedrooms and bathroom. The effect is fresh, tasteful, modern and airy. With a little careful mapping - never be without a good street map in Lisbon! - it's easy to stroll uphill or downhill to nearby bus, tram and Metro stops, though the main central-city areas can in fact be reached quite easily on foot. There are many small shops and restaurants close by, with the night-life of the Bairro Alto just a 10-minute walk away. By day the street is very quiet (by Lisbon standards), but a garbage collection depot across the street - an odd addition to this rather genteel neighbourhood - can spring noisily to life in the early hours: visitors may want to pack a good pair of ear-plugs! But this is a minor criticism of a clean, well-run and convenient base-camp in a charming, old-fashioned setting.

"Excellent location and hosting"
Stayed at this lovely apartment in July. It had everything that I needed and was within a short walk to some great restaurants and bars, which was really buzzing. The weather was fantastic and in apartment was cool. when I come back to Lisbon, will definitely stay here again. Next time I wanna come with family, because there enough space for 4 persons and really good located. Thank you Justo very much!

"Lovely little house and great for a family"
We stayed for a week in this cottage near Principe Real. The location is great for those who want to be able to walk around in old Lisbon. Its very near Bairro Alto and Rato is a bit further. Lots of eateries, everyone we tried was good. Some were very small and local but very welcoming and provided pleasant traditional Portuguese food. The pastries are second to none. Justo welcomed us and gave us useful information about places to go and getting around and about. This was very helpful. The accommodation is well equipped and compact and we felt if anything was needed all we had to do was contact Justo. My sons were very impressed with the marble flooring, the decorative tiling and chandeliers. It felt like a real break from our usual surroundings. Bellem is worth a day out and also lots of good art museums in Lisbon. All the ones we visited had an English translation of the exhibit which was great.
Thanks so much! Glad you and your family enjoyed and felt comfortable. Best wishes.

"Great value, terrific apartment for family"
We visited Lisbon in mid June with the family (2 kids 14 and 12). The apartment is very nice: very comfortable double bed and 2 single beds in a separate bedroom; new well equipped kitchen; washing machine; good WiFi; comfortable lounge; good air conditioning. Could not fault the apartment and Justo was great to deal with and very helpful with information and advice. The location is a 5-7 minute walk up hill to the Bairro Alto area which has many restaurants and bars in narrow streets (prepare for the salty food!). The apartment is in a pleasant street near a museum. You can easily walk 5 minutes to the famous tram. 10 minutes and you get to the metro. You can also walk to the main train station in about 15 minutes- which is handy for Sintra. We also walked to the tram for Belem. Having said that we often paid 5-6 euro to get a taxi back to the apartment because of the hills. We thought 340 Euro for 4 night for 4 people was remarkable value. Why would you stay in a hotel box when you can enjoy this lovely apartment? There were plenty of small shops nearby to get breakfast stuff and a supermarket about 7 minutes walk. Would not hesitate to recommend.

"Wonderful stay for a family"
What is different about the place is that it’s like home – the owner has taken care of everything to make your stay cozy and convenient. The place is situated in a safe, central location on a quiet street. The apartment is well maintained and the beds are comfortable. It has no terrace or a view, but we did not consider that a problem as we were out most of the time. I would recommend this apartment.

"Good location and clean and comfortable accommodation"
I stayed with two friends at Lisbon Cottage and we felt the accommodation was very well presented, extremely clean and tidy and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and there was plenty of hot water and the beds were comfortable with good pillows and lots of blankets etc to suit any individual. The property is well placed for visiting the city as a whole and is in a quiet location. It is near to the old quarter of the Biarro Alto and within easy walking distance of the city centre shops and public transport. We were met by the owner late in the evening due to our flight times and he was very helpful and informative. We enjoyed our stay very much.
