Tucked beneath the Castelo São Jorge – known for its postcard image of Portugal, the Pateo is within a 10 minute walk of the castle, Rossio, Alfama, Chiado, aswell as many other tourist attractions.

The Páteo is located at Largo do Palácio da Rosa, on the corner of Rua das Farinhas, one of the accesses to the Castle of Sao Jorge, Portugal's emblematic monument in the heart of medieval Moorish quarter of Lisbon.
As old as Portuguese nationality, the Mouraria (Moorish) quarter - so named for being the place where the Moors (Arabs) were hosted after the conquest of Lisbon in 1147, by D. Afonso Henriques - still retains its original architectural characteristics, providing the surroundings of The Páteo, with an atmosphere of magic and enchantment.

Fado (Fatum, destiny) had its origins in the sad laments of the Moors after being defeated by the Christians. The sadness and melancholy, so common in Fado, would have been inherited from these people.
