The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region

Lisbon, the city of seven hills, has been the capital of Portugal since the 12th century. It has a long history that can be experienced in the old neighbourhoods, which may be visited by foot or tram. The Atlantic climate offers wonderful conditions to travel all year round.

Lisbon bears the mark of an incredible heritage with laid-back pride. The city also presents an intriguing variety of faces to those who negotiate its switchback streets. In the oldest neighbourhoods, stepped alleys are lined with pastel-colour houses and crossed by laundry hung out to dry; here and there miradouros (vantage points) afford spectacular river or city views. In the centre, black-and-white mosaic cobblestone side-walks border wide boulevards, and blue-and-white azulejos (painted and glazed ceramic tiles) adorn churches, restaurants, and fountains.

Apartment 33 is located at the southwest corner of Praça Camões, where Rua Horta Seca turns into Praça Luis de Camões, at the heart of Chiado.

Chiado is considered the most beautiful area of historic Lisbon. It was a place of residence of the Portuguese royalty and of the political and cultural elites. Nearby are located the theatre S. Luis and the opera S. Carlos.

A little further is Camões square (Praça de Camões), next to Bairro Alto, picturesque but raffish. Part of Lisbon's nightlife is concentrated in this quarter, where you can hear 'fados' being sung in some restaurants and cafés. Chiado and Bairro Alto are where locals and tourists meet, with elegant hotels, old cafés and the best international fashion shops.

Praça Camões is one of the most important squares named after the Portuguese Prince of the poetry, with his statue in the centre. It is well situated near Bairro Alto and Chiado. Several museums, operas, theatres and churches are walking distance from the flat, which is located opposite the luxurious 5 stars Bairro Alto Hotel.

A 5 minute walk takes you to the the funicular Bica and also to Rossio, in Baixa. In the other direction, you can find Praça do Comércio, centre of the old Portuguese empire near the river Tejo (Tagus).

It is close to shops, restaurants, cafes, banks, cash machines, public transports (inc subway station Baixa/Chiado station 50 meters away and electric trams) 24 hour taxi stands, etc. Also in the same square there are a pharmacy and a post office, as well as grocery shops within 5 minutes walking.

To go to Sintra or to Óbidos you must catch the train at Entre-Campos train station, which is just a short subway trip from Chiado.

The nearest airport is Lisbon International Airport at 12 kilometres; the nearest railway station is International Station of Santa Apolónia at 1 kilometer.

Come and see for yourself!

"Very loud location and nothing seemed to work properly."

This is an abbreviated version of the email I sent to Traveling to Lisbon on May 2, to which I still have not received a response:"I wanted to write to express my disappointment with our recent s… More

Dear Amy

Apologies that I have only now been able to reply to you but I have been out of the office and I am the person responsible for doing so. My name is Maria de Azevedo Coutinho and I am the Quality Manager at TravellingtoLisbon. I am sorry to hear about your experience and how disappointed you were. Lisbon is a wonderful city and I am sorry you could not enjoy it fully. Firstly, please let me apologize on behalf of TravelingtoLisbon for things that went wrong, some within our control and even for the ones that weren´t, as ultimately it is our guests stay that counts. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to write to us explaining all these things so we can make right from wrong.

I would like to, for all it is worth, at least try to explain a few of these things and thank you for your understanding on the ones you did.
1. I can totally understand that after waiting for all that time to be let in to the apartment that would grant a waiver on the check in fee but unfortunately Raquel most probably did not feel comfortable to decide on this, as it is company´s policy. It is called a check-in fee and is only applied in special circumstances like late check-ins, weekends or holidays and when this is done poorly (time wise) it should have not been charged. We have already contacted you to sort this out.

2. Wi-fi. We never really had problems with wifi in that apartment, which actually has both cable and wireless internet. As you know, because you then got Internet connection we did go to the apartment to fix the problem but unfortunately it was a problem with the service provider and not one that we could have fixed entirely. We scheduled an appointment with the technician but unfortunately their only availability was after you left. The problem was fixed then. You should have been kept up to date with this, not that it would make much difference to you, but at least you would know that we did not ignore it.

3. We were not aware that the boiler was not working, until we heard it from you. We had a guest staying in that apartment for over 9months and never did we have a complaint to that effect. Obviously the minute I was told we acted on it and had it repaired. Shame that we did not get a call on our emergency number explaining the situation, so we would have the chance to fix the problem in time for you.

4. In almost every guide book Bairro Alto is mentioned as an area of bars restaurants and nightlife, which is obviously noisy. I am sorry that you were not aware of this when booking your apartment and that you did not manage to have a decent night´s sleep; (un)fortunately we have a huge amount of guests for whom this apartment is perfect due to its proximity to all of these. Nevertheless it is a super peaceful quarter during the day, which I find very interesting.

5. We are definitely at fault regarding the hand soap. You are meant to have it, as you are meant to have one roll of toilet paper per bathroom and a bottle of wine in the fridge. These are the items we consider basic and should be in the apartment for your arrival. It is in fact a self-catering apartment, but that what we leave is only for the first day so you are not caught unaware should also be explained to you on arrival.

We are good at customer service and attending to our guests complaints and needs, hence why we have an emergency number available 24/7. Our guests are obviously very important to us, not only on a business perspective but also as visitors to a city we love and to whom we would like to offer the possibility of a memorable stay in our country. We did not succeed with you but please know that this is not the service we like to offer at all.

Once again please accept my apologies on behalf of TravelingtoLisbon hoping that we can make it up to you.

"Lively neighborhood with lots to do"

Thank you very much for taking the time to review our apartment. We are happy to see that you enjoyed your stay.

Regarding the hardwood floors we are aware of this situation, and we are trying to find the best solution to this issue. Hopefully this didn´t make a big damage in your experience in our apartment.

We certainly cannot wait to accommodate you next time round.
