The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, with a population in the city of about half million people. It retains much of its history and charm from centuries ago, and it serves as a reminiscent of one of the greatest maritime history in the world. Its rustic charm, warm people, historical neighborhoods, and reasonable prices are making it the destination of choice. Nearby are two highly recommended places to visit: Sintra, a romantic historical town up in a mountain with summer palaces, and Cascais – Estoril, world class coastal towns.
Mediterranean Weather
Situated on the westernmost coast of continental Europe, with Spain on its east and the Atlantic Ocean on its west, Portugal's location puts it perfectly in the Mediterranean climate zone. Lisbon, the capital, gets an average of 330 sunny days per year. August can get very warm, with a few days in the 90s. November temperatures in the city can remain high enough for northern Europeans to sunbathe on its beautiful coasts. Even during December, when some of the most enchanting holiday lights in Europe illuminate Lisbon like a jewel, daytime highs are often near 60F/15C.
One of the Most Charming Old Cities in Europe
A very old city, Lisbon was controlled by the Romans in the 2nd century BC, and much of its old-world charm has been retained: many older buildings are still adorned with azulejos (tiles), and pavements are covered in mosaic. North American visitors may be reminded of San Francisco, California, with the trams trundling through the 7 hills located in the city, and the 25 de Abril Bridge, constructed by the same company as the Golden Gate Bridge. The roads can be windy, snaking up and down the hills, with antique street cars and funiculars (and modern buses) transporting the locals as well as tourists. Situated on one of Lisbon's highest hills, giving it a 360 degree view, is the Castle of Sao Jorge (Castelo de Sao Jorge), which was built by the Moors in 795 AD. In the 12th century, Christian crusaders and local fighters took over Lisbon, and the castle became the official palace of the kings of Portugal.
The Lisbon / Central Lisbon area
After completion of the reservation, guests will get a simple itinerary for a 5-7 day trip, including transportation and restaurant tips.
Access to other neighbourhoods by foot is quick: Baixa (at the bottom of the hill) in 5-10 minutes, Chiado in 15 minutes, and a major subway station in 10-15 minutes. (A guide to finding short cuts for walking is offered in the welcome book.)
A few steps away from the apartment is Castelo Sao Jorge, a castle remains and citadel, which was built in medieval times, and changed hands between the Moorish kings from the south and the Christian conquerors from the north. The castle, its terrace and walls are nestled on the highest point of the hill, affording a 360 degree view of Lisbon, the magnificent river Tagus and its ports, and the other 6 hills undulating across the city.
A few steps away from the apartment, in the opposite direction, are the remains of a theater built for the Roman emperor Nero, and down the hill to the right is the majestic main cathedral Se, built in 1050. The cathedral's tower can be seen from the balcony of the apartment, along with a partial view of the river.

The apartment is about 15km from the airport. You can buy a taxi voucher from the office of tourism, just outside of customs, for about 20 Euros. Tell the taxi driver you are going to the castle (Castello Sao Jorge).
The apartment is easy to reach by mini bus, tram or taxi. The bus stop is 10m (30ft) from the apartment (frequency: 15 minutes), and the whimsical tram station is a 2 minute walk.
Car rental is absolutely not needed in Lisbon, although a private garage is located in the basement. The international airport is approximately 15 minutes away by taxi (12 to 20 euros).

We REALLY enjoyed staying in your apartment and appreciate all the personal touches you provide for your visitors. We didn't make much use of your beautiful kitchen, except for breakfast. We took advantage of the good dining around the Castelo and elsewhere and saw no reason to spend time shopping and cooking dinner. We do enough of that at home! For dinner, we enjoyed Clara's, the Chapito, and, most especially, the Wine Bar. We had two very informative and satisfying visits at the latter-- one to try a variety of reds (and the meats and cheeses), and another to try whites. We enjoyed an evening walk around the Castelo itself, and riding the Elevadores (Gloria and St Justa) for a walk around Bairro Alto (the Jesuit Church of St Roque was a high point of that). As you can tell, we packed in a lot in our five days. Having your apartment as a quiet base away from the crowds was a restorative: we could come home for a siesta and then enjoy the neighborhood in the cool of the evening. Thanks for getting our Portugal trip off to such a good start in Lisbon! Your apartment and your notes (before and during the visit) put our feet firmly on the ground for a delightful holiday. We don't know when we may be back, but we'll certainly be in touch with you again should our travels take us Lisbon-ward. |

We had a superb time at this apartment. After initial reservations about signing up with someone in USA and collection of the key on arrival all went perfectly. Maria the greeter was delightful and nothing too much trouble. The apartment is great (just as you see on the web) and perfectly located in a good, quiet area but still close to all the action - people watching from the balcony was brilliant we were even asked for directions 3 times!. Joe the owner provides a plethora of excellent tour info and restaurant recommendations before you go which means you do not waste time on arrival . The restaurant was excellent and only only 200 metres away. Many thanks to Joe and Maria. |

Joe,
You are a lucky man owning such a lovely apartment in a great location. Having visited many cities over the years, Lisbon is up there with the best. Should we return, we would not look for any other accommodation and would not hesitate to recommend this apartment to our friends. We live in a small market town in England called Pontefract, and also have a castle which is mainly in ruins as it was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell.

Staying in this apartment was a great pleasure! We loved both – location and the style of this perfectly equipped place. Coming home at night we enjoyed sitting in the living room with its great illumination from outside! Thanks.

Hello Joe, Hello future visitors,
This is our 5th day here in Lisboa and I think it’s a very beautiful city. My daughter and I are here on a week’s vacation. We live north west of Washington DC in a small town, so small it is not even on the map. Our stay here has been wonderful. The apartment is lovely and the views from the balconies and windows are so charming. I love Lisboa’s narrow winding, cobble stoned, and hilly roads. I think Lisboa is my favourite city in Europe.

Wow! What a place you have. We are a family from Walnut Creek, CA, 20 minutes east of Berkeley. Your apartment is gorgeous – The ceiling, shutters, doors, cabitnets – granite and marble – all so tastefully done. The washer/ dryer was a fun experience! We are so thrilled to be able to have spent our Lisbon stay here. We will save your info for possible future visits or to recommend to tothers. We hope all who stay here take good care of your home. It is so beautiful. PS: Let us know if you desire a co-owner.

Hi Joe,
Well, what a fantastic apartment you have here! The old areas of Lisbon (Alfama, Catello) are simply magical. We’ve spent a wonderful week here and are amazed we’ve overlooked Lisbon until now. It is truly a hidden European gem. We live in London and are looking forward to another visit sometime in the future.
