Bairro Alto is a picturesque working class quarter (dating from the 16th century) that has traditionally been the city's bohemian haunt of artists and writers along with Chiado. Its grid of streets is quiet during the day, but at night becomes the city's vibrant nightlife quarter by excellence. It's a place inhabited by old ladies and young artsy hipsters, giving it a vibe that is simultaneously old-fashioned and avant-garde, a shabby-chic neighborhood that really needs no name.
