About this location
The West Lothian region
Linlithgow is a historic Royal Burgh located in the central lowlands of Scotland - about 18 miles from Edinburgh and under an hour from Glasgow by train or car. Linlithgow is a great base from which to explore Scotland, with excellent road and rail links.
It was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots and the preserved ruins of the Royal Palace can be visited in a picturesque setting next to Linlithgow Loch .Along the High Street, numerous restaurants and cafés compete for your attention. Working off the calories afterwards can be a pleasure too. Take a swim or hit the gym at Linlithgow's leisure centre or explore the great outdoors at Beecraigs Country Park, which lies just south of Linlithgow. From here you take a walk or cruise along the Union Canal from the Linlithgow Canal Centre. Apart from cruises to the aqueduct and town boat trips, the Canal Centre has a cosy tearoom, Scotland's only canal museum, an education centre, self-drive boat hire and boat charters.Linlithgow hosts numerous events throughout the year, which attract locals and visitors alike. Scotch Hop brings Scottish country dancing to the halls of Linlithgow Palace each summer, whilst the Linlithgow Marches is a not-to-be-missed in June.
Explore the Falkirk area including the Falkirk Wheel; the world's first rotating boatlift recreates the link between the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals. Don't miss Blackness Castle which dates form the 15th century and its stunning views over to the Forth bridges.
