Home description

Newly opened in late summer 2009, this delightful studio apartment in a traditional town house in Limoux is ideally placed for enjoying the shops, cafe-bars, restaurants and market of the delightful, medieval market town of Limoux on the banks of the River Aude. The location allows you to walk everywhere in the town, and also to explore by car this beautiful region - visiting Carcassonne, Mirepoix, the Cathar Castles, the mountains - even a day trip to Andorra or Spain is possible.

A 'little touch of luxury' is the aim here, as a welcome pack and bathrobes will be supplied for your stay of 3 nights or more. You can relax in the apartment listening to your favourite CDs or watching TV with English satellite channels or French channels if you prefer. A hairdryer is also provided in case you are flying 'hand baggage' only.

The apartment is only approximately 20 minutes drive from Carcassonne airport - and should you not wish to hire a car it may be possible to arrange to collect you and deliver you back to Carcassonne airport for a reasonable charge. If you are hiring a car, parking is generally available in the town in the streets around the apartment, or near the river.

This studio apartment of around 50 sq.m. is on the 1st floor of the building and is open plan. The living space comprises a comfortable sitting area, a dining area, a small kitchenette, and a double bed with quality bed linen, storage and hanging. There's a large, stylish, modern shower room with WC and washbasin. The decor is new and very much in the French style in keeping with the building and the original tiled floors. The authentic French windows lead on to a small balcony from where you can see the top of the main town square about 80 metres away.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

This part of the Languedoc has a sunny Mediterranean climate. It can be hot in summer, but the temperature is often tempered by a breeze. Now the 3rd most visited region in France by British people, the Languedoc offers something for everyone.

Miles of long, sandy beaches, coastal lagoons, vibrant cities such as Beziers, Narbonne and Montpellier, historical sites such as the Canal du Midi, Carcassonne and the Cathar castles, fabulous scenery, great cuisine and vineyards, vineyards, vineyards.

Limoux area

Limoux - There's a good reason to visit Limoux whatever the season! Limoux is the jewel in the crown of this area and in summer there are lots of authentic festivities (not just put on for the tourists!). These include food and wine-fests, dancing and music, classic cars, flamenco dancing, flea markets - not to mention a superb weekly night-time market market in the high summer. In Winter, there's the Limoux carnival which takes place every weekend from 10th January to 21st March 2010 - lots to see, great costumes, parades, etc.

Thrice daily, the Fecos, groups of masked dancers in fantastic costumes dance under the arcades of the main square - the show differs each time and is completely free. Early Spring sees the 'Toques et Cochers' festival (chefs hats and bell towers) attended by the finest 'sommeliers' and and cordon bleu chefs in France. And in the Autumn - the Grandes Fetes de Septembre with concerts and fairs. Limoux is most famous for it's sparkling white wine - Blanquette de Limoux - and there are many opportunities for tasting and buying it!

Festivals aside, the town has much to offer as well as shops, cafe-bars and restaurants. There are 2 indoor swimming pools open from late September to late June - and for the summer 3 outdoor swimming pools. You can also re-live the epic crusades of the 13th century among the 'Citidelles du Vestige'. There are 2 further museums - 'automatons' and the Piano Museum - and gardens with perfumed plants.

Other activities in the surrounding area: Canoe-kayaking, horse-riding, cycling, walking and fishing. In winter, ski-ing as the nearest ski station are less than 90 minutes away.

Other places to visit: Carcassonne - with it's 52 turrets and 2 rings of medieval fortifications - a fascinating day out. Mirepoix - another picture-book medieval town that looks as though it is straight out of a film set - however it is quite real and authentic and a Joie de Vivre favourite! For lovers of the montains you can visit the Pyrenees and Andorra to the South and the Black Mountains to the North. For those of you interested in Cathar history, there are several Cathar castles to visit as well as Rennes-le-Chateau if you have an interest in the Holy Grail stories.

Markets: As well as the market/s in LImoux - there are some fantastic markets locally - very colourful and offering lots of fresh, seasonal local produce. Mirepoix on a Monday; Carcassonne on a Tuesday; Esperaza etc etc.

Restaurants: There's a wide selection of cafe-bars and restaurants in Limoux details of which are provided in the apartment. Supermarkets: There is a large supermarket and a number of small ones in Limoux.
