The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
Visualise field after field of vineyards and sunflowers.
This is a beautiful region of France where the Pyrenees are visible from many places locally and easily reached.
Steeped in medieval history the location is wonderful for visiting the many Cathar castles and of course the fairytale ancient cité of old Carcassonne (filmed in Camelot and documented in the Da Vinci code) a must for young and old alike.
The "rose" city of Toulouse, mediterranean beaches and Pyrenees mountains make great days out and are close to an hour away.
Limoux / Roquetaillade area
Le Petit-Chateau is located in a village called Roquetaillade and is situated approximately 10km from Limoux.
Roquataillade is typical of a sleepy circulade village of the region where the pace of life is very slow but you may find yourself here when there is a local fete and then there will be dancing in the streets literally.
Listen out for the modern horse and cart (car) as she delivers fresh bread to your door.
Limoux is renowned for its sparkling wine Blanquette de Limoux said to predate champagne. It has to be tried and where better than at the summer night market held every week in July and August.
Market day is every Friday in Limoux and Monday in the medieval and historic square of Mirepoix. The area is steeped in history offering a significant number of architectural and historical monuments including the UN heritage fortified city of Carcassonne, the remnants of the Cathar fortress of Mt. Segur, a number of Romanesque churches, to name just a few
