The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Limoux is a vibrant little town (population 15,000) with a very lively square (plenty of bars and restaurants) and a month-long famous carnival that lasts from January to the end of March. It is at the centre of a large wine-producing region which is most famous for its fizzy white wine, blanquette. Festivals are frequent events: the best known is probably the 'Toques et Clochers' which celebrates the wine production of the area and takes place once a year in Spring in different villages nearby. Cycling is great sport for locals and visitors alike: one of the stages of the Tour de France has originated in Limoux in the past two seasons with all its associated razzmatazz. In little more than an hour driving you can be at the top of the Pyrenees having negotiated numerous hairpin bends, or in the same time you can be enjoying the beaches of the Mediterranean. In addition to the Cathar Castles - probably Peyreypertuse is the most famous - there are historical and pre-hisorical sites too numerous to mention. And caves with spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. This is an area enormously rich in culture and history. Eating and drinking is legendary: cassoulet is the best known local dish but seafood at the coast is also a must. The Limoux area is strong in organic food production and a wide choice can be found in local markets and dedicated supermarkets. Apart from the famous blanquette, the region is developing a reputation as a quality producer of both red and white wines with plenty of opportunity for tasting and local advice to hand. The colourful local market takes place in Limoux every Friday morning and there are many others in nearby towns. Swimming, tennis, kayaking, canoeing are all available nearby as well as many lovely walks along the river or further afield in the foothills of the Pyrenees and in the real mountains. The area is rich in wildlife and birds; the wildflowers in May and June in the higher areas are spectacular. Limoux is a fascinating and beautiful little town at the heart of a diverse and culturally rich area.

"A true gem..."

My wife summed it up as "the best holiday she has ever had"! Villa Ste Marie sits in its extensive, private, terraced garden with stunning south-facing views towards wooded hills and countryside. The villa has everything you need for a relaxing stay and the town of Limoux is within easy walking distance and has 4 large supermarkets as well as local specialist shops and restaurants. We ate out a couple of times but mostly we dined on the terrace where we enjoyed drinking the local fizz, blanquette, and being entertained by the squirrels and other wildlife. We had fabulous weather, maybe a little too hot, but the river Aude is a 5 minute walk away and we used it many times to cool off. Limoux is very easy to reach from Carcassonne airport (25 minute drive) and is perfectly positioned to explore this diverse region. We visited the beautiful village of Lagrasse, the Cathar castle at Montsegur, the spectacular Gorge de Galamus, Carcassonne and La Cite, swam in the river at Limoux, Lagrasse and Rennes Les Bains, and strolled around the colourful markets of Limoux, Mirepoix, Esperaza, to mention just a few. All in all, Villa Ste Marie is a great place for a relaxing holiday as well as a perfect base from which to explore this beautiful part of France. We were very sad to leave but also very happy to have discovered such a true gem. We will definitely be back.....

"Relaxing, peaceful stay."

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in this traditional French holiday home. The house had all we needed, was comfortable and well equipped. It was lovely to use different areas of the garden as the sun moved around. The owner was welcoming and helpful. It's situated on the edge of Limoux which is a delightful small French town. Within the local area there's plenty of walking, cycling and visits to historical sites. We were using public transport and managed fine. A car would allow you to visit more places.
