The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

The Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, close to Spain and the Pyrenees, is warm in summer, with crisp, cold winters, and sunshine for most of the year. There are quaint Medieval villages, outdoor recreation, tumbling rivers and stunning views of the mountains. The region is famous for its delightful wines and sparkling Blanquette de Limoux, and since the area is fairly undiscovered, there are relatively few tourists.
The Limoux area
Limoux is an historic town which dates back to medieval times. It's surrounded by interesting places to visit , including the ancient walled city of Carcassonne, the enchanting coastal town of Collioure, and the Pyrenees, with their spectacular mountain views.
There are a full range of outdoor sports and activities including kayaking, canoeing, rafting, walking, cycling and horseriding, with an excellent golf course at Carcassonne. And Limoux has even been chosen to be a stage town for the 2011 Tour de France! Very exciting!
An hour's drive from Limoux are the ski resorts of Ax-les-Thermes and Font Romeu. Enjoy the winter sports in cold crisp air and brilliant blue skies, finishing off with a warming glass of 'vin chaud' . From January to March join in with the 'Fecos', where dancers in pierrot costumes circle the square, in a winter Carnival unique to this delightful town.

We enjoyed staying at this clean, comfortable, well-equipped appartment in Limoux. The position is perfect with a large balcony overlooking the river to dine on or watch people pass over the bridge - very relaxing. We were particularly amused in the mornings by the chatty ducks! And it was so easy to stroll the few metres over the bridge to the centre of such a pleasant town. When we could manage to tear ourselves away, we found the surrounding area delightful with plenty of things to do and see - walking or running the vineyard paths around LImoux, Carcasonne, Homps on the Canal du Midi, the Aude valley, over the Pyrenees (spectacular) and, of course, sampling the local cuisine. Response: A visit to the Languedoc will always live up to your expectations... an exciting journey into the past with all the comforts of today. |
Guestbook for Maison du Pont
A lovely apartment in a great setting.
We loved the apartment. It was in a superb location overlooking the river and had the sun from the early afternoon to evening. A nice way to end the day or start the evening! The rooms were very spacious, clean and light, The apartment had everything you would need for a comfortable stay. Limoux is a lovely place with the restaurants and bars on the main square being the focal point for spending many a happy hour watching the world go by!. It also has a good bakery and about 5 mins drive away is Le Clerc supermarket which is probably the best in the area. Limoux is great for sightseeing in the wider area. We would recommend: Rennes le Chateau, a steep drive up to the tiny village at the top with great views of Pyrenees and interesting church! (you go through the village of Couiza to get to it); Esperaza market on Sunday morning, a magical experience; Quillan which has another smaller market on Wednesday morning and nice place to have a coffee by the river (Quillan also has a lovely restaurant called Le Galerie which does great meals at good prices and very reasonable pichets of wine!); Rennes le Bains is a small spa town, tranquil and lovely to walk around and you can enjoy a nice leisurely lunch at the small restaurant under the plane trees in the square; Domaine Gayda in Brugaroilles (approx 7kms away) has a lovely restaurant, great food in a lovely setting with panoramic views and good wine you can taste and buy on site (Wednesday lunch for 3 courses with wine is only 23 Euros per person). We have found the people of Limoux, and the surrounding area to be pleasant, friendly and helpful.
We would highly recommend this apartment and we hope to be back later in 2012 if it is available! Would suit friends and older families and also romantic couples!
