There are 2 large single beds in the master bedroom overlooking the river which may be pushed together to form a King-sized single, a double bed and a single in the second bedroom. The large master bedroom doubles as a T.V. and sitting room, although people often choose to sit round the large dining table in the kitchen. Recently built and equipped with good quality appliances, you will find all that you need to make a fine meal.
Leading to the second bathroom there is a small room which gives onto a private terrace where you may sit and enjoy the sun, breakfast in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening.
Further details outdoors:
Clearly a main feature of the Maison de Lali is its location on the river bank, enjoying lovely views towards the hills and the ever changing life of a river but also on the edge of a pretty but lively town, with its 3 month Carnival and the production of Blanquette, the 'original' champagne. Walking into town many guests just enjoy sitting having a coffee on the square watching the world go by.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

This area in the south has one of the best climates in France, with low rainfall and plenty of sunshine. Situated as we are between mountains, ocean and sea, the climate can be variable within a few kilometers, so you can usually find the sun even in winter.
Languedoc comes from the fact that this was the way 'yes - Oc' was said in the Occitan language originally found in the southern part of France. Seeped in Mediterranean history, from the Visigoth, Roman, Aragonese - when we first bought the house we were told that it had been the King of Aragon's house- and also the famous Cathars of the 14th century, the depths of history here are inexhaustible. The beautiful Romanesque abbeys are wonderful to visit, and a must is a visit to La Cité de Carcassonne with its towers and castellated walls.
A series of famous carvings by the 'Maitre de Capestany' can be found in several of the nearby abbeys.
Recently the hilltop village of Rennes le Chateau has drawn many curious visitors with its tales of buried treasure, bizarre sculptures in the church and mysterious legends; leading to a series of books which make for fascinating inquiry. Close by is found the Pic de Bugarach, with an even more curious reputation as being the place to be in the upcoming apocalypse on 20/12/2012, when an ancient Mayan calendar finishes. Plenty to explore!
The Limoux area
Limoux itself is a little more down to earth, being most renowned for its sparkling wine -'Blanquette' which is the original champagne, compares well for quality and is considerably better value. Being a much smaller area, the production is limited, but in recent years has attracted the attention of the discerning connoisseur, bringing with it a rapid improvement of the other wines of the region - we especially like the Chardonnays.
One of the favourite things for visitors and locals to do is to sit the Place de la Republique in the center of town. Surrounded by cafes and restaurants you can while away hours watching the world go by, choosing to be in the sun or the shade, drinking good coffee or a glass of wine, and have reasonably priced meals in a fine setting. Tucked into the side streets are some excellent restaurants where you will pay a little for some very fine cooking. There is something for every budget, another favourite where some locals eat every day is Le Gare where a set menu costs as little as 11€.
The Tour de France often comes through or near Limoux, and in both 2011 and 2012 there is stage start within 100 meters of the apartment! A wonderful area for cycling, there are several specialized hotels catering for cycling holidays in town.
From mid January there is the Limoux carnival, at 3 months the longest in the world. With different groups displaying every weekend and centered around the main square - with many stops in the bars and cafes - in is a wonderful and lively spectacle, with the masks and costumes a closely guarded secret before they appear.
Somewhat more highbrow, there are some wonderful musical concerts in the area. A special mention should be given to a series called Festival Fugue en Aude Romane, which takes place in the second half of July, which are set in the Romanesque Abbeys. Limoux itself has a Piano museum, and also, a little strangely, an automaton museum.

La Maison de Lali on the River Aude in Limoux is simply wonderful. The hosts, Jonathan and Angelle are helpful and gracious in every way. The suites ( we also stayed in "Swallow") are very well appointed and so easy to live in that you will feel as if you are "home" in your personal place in France. You will find elegant decor, with the fine woodwork of Jonathan and the stunning artwork of Angelle everywhere. The peaceful swish of the river is at your window. Friendly ducks welcome you each morning. Swifts and swallows fill the air in the evening. Fresh crispy baguette are just a minute away and everything else you may need is a short walk. You don't need a car but having one, with a GPS with European maps, is a huge asset. The surrounding countryside is truly breathtaking. In closing I have to say this place is one of the best. |
Guestbook for La Maison de Lali 2nd floor
Dear Angele and Jonathan,
What a fantastic week we have had in Limoux! Your apartment was perfect and spotlessly clean. We certainly slept well in your beds and loved waking up to the river views and the ducks waiting for breakfast. We have also hugely appreciated the time you have given us in talking about the area and giving us invaluable titbits of information for when we move here. We certainly now know that we have made the right decision to move permanently to Limoux. Nicole and Bill, Vietnam.
Dear Angele and Jonathan,
Staying here is like living in a painting - the colors, the textures and patterns are all so pleasing. And, the building itself, so rich in history and strength of character, provides a feeling of peace and tranquillity. You've created a wondrous space!
Barbara, San Antonio, Texas.
