Approximate non-stop, direct travel times by road from the ports are: Roscoff 2hrs; St Malo 2.5hrs; Caen 4hrs, Cherbourg 4.5hrs; Calais 7.00hrs If you are flying and then hiring a car Lorient is 45mins, Brest 2hrs and Dinard 2hrs. In all cases French Customs usually clear very quickly but in peak season the ferries can take an hour to unload. Quick turnarounds are the order of the day for budget airlines so luggage handlers may load the next flight before bringing arrival luggage to the carousel. (TopTip one person wait for baggage the other go through car hire processing.) Direct routes are given. There are short cuts, particularly from St Malo, Avranches & Dinard that the Michelin map and a good navigator and sometimes GPS will perceive. On a ring road the top name indicates the direction in which the next exit will take. The spacing of signs is less formal than in the UK but they usually “come up” more quickly. Signs are smaller, often unlit but on main beam dazzle. UK cards may not work at the péages so have change ready and, of course the window is always on the left. Speed camaras and speed checks are becoming much more frequent and fines, for auto camaras, are posted to your UK address. (New European agreement!) On the spot fines demand cash but you demand a receipt [facture]. )Apart from the larger towns at busy times driving in Normandy and Brittany is very, very much more peaceful than in the UK. Stops on autoroutes are usually offered at ½ hr intervals. All have a picnic area and toilets. Other services, if present, are indicated on the pre-warning boards. July-August on peak days (weekends) hold-ups at péages and toll bridges can be considerable.

Pass the days walking or cycling on the deserted roads, visiting the superb beaches or just taking in the peace and quiet you won't find anywhere else.

This area is an absolute paradise for cycling enthusiasts. Plouay hosts its own championships at the end of August every year. All the top riders attend - one of the highlights of the cycling year and a must for any keen rider (there is also an all-comers event for both men and women - arrangements can be made for anyone wanting to enter this event.
