The location is ideal even for winter sports (the fashionable and exclusive St. Moritz being situated within 1hr drive) and you can easily travel to Milan by train, where you can do your shopping without being bothered about traffic and car parking: in Lierna there is a small and easy to reach train station (info, prices and times on: www.trenitalia.com). The public boat transport can quickly take you to Bellagio right on the other side of the lake (info, prices and times of the boat line on: www.navigazionelaghi.it). Not far from the house there is a restaurant called "Il Crotto" where local specialties are still being prepared according to the old recipes (Handmade pasta, desserts etc.): we strongly recommend it!

The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
As with most subalpine lakes of Italy, the geological origin of the Lake of Como is of a glacial sort.During the quaternary era the whole of the basin was covered by a grand glacier which reached as far as Brianza beyond the lake branches of Como and Lecco forming the existing morenic hills. The lake was formed in the cavity dug out by the glacier. Evidence of its slow passage is shown by the rocks which still bear signs of erosion and by numerous erratic boulders which are present, mainly on the high plains of the Larian Triangle (the centre part of the Lake). The Lake of Como, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times, has always been an important passageway between the northern regions and the Po Valley. After the Gauls came the Romans who made it their strategic outpost opening the route on the western bank which connected the "Larius" with the Rhaetia region. Later, during the lombard rule, this pathway still named "Regina", was reopened and restored by Queen Teodolinda. Because of the important and strategic position of the lake which allowed one to reach the mountain passes of Maloja and Stelvio, the area was for centuries subject to invasions and domination. After the Francs, around the year 1000, the city of Como which had become an independant Commune had to continuously fight for its autonomy. It later was subjected to the signory of the Viscontis and of the Sforzas. These Lordships thought of widening the bed of the Adda in order to have a river link with the Duchy of Milan; for this reason they decided firstly to open the Paderno waterway. Then came foreign rule; first the Spanish then the Austrians and for a brief period even the French. The Lake of Como measures 146 square kms and is the third biggest Italian lake after Lake Garda and Lake Verbano. It has a characteristic upside-down Y shape with Colico to the north Lecco to the south-east and Como to the south-west. Its perimetre measures 170kms. The maximum length between Como and Gera Lario is 50km; the maximum width between Fiumelatte and Cadenabbia is 4.4km; the minimum width between Careno and Toriggia measures 650mts; its maximum depth of 410 metres between Argegno and Nesso makes it the deepest of all the European lakes; its average above-sea level is 199mts. The lake is entirely surrounded by mountains, the highest being Monte Legnone (2609mt) above Colico. There are 37 rivers flowing into the lake the most important being the Adda followed by the Mera. The Adda is also its only outlet. It flows out through Lecco and after having formed the lakelets of Garlate and Olginate it continues towards the Po river. The only island of the lake is Isola Comacina, situated in the Como branch of the lake opposite the commune of Sala Comacina. The climate and the flora The Lake of Como is particularly favourable and renowned for its generally mild and humid climate which assists the lushness of nature. All of this is possible due to the Alpine ridge which resists the winds from the north and also because of the great mass of water of the lakes which tend to reduce sudden drops in temperature. In the sunnier areas, for example around Tremezzo, the winter climate is never very harsh and in the summer the heat is hardly ever stifling as it is mitigated by great vegetation. However, rainfall is heavy in the pre-alpine zone. Thanks to these unique climatic characteristics, the flora along the lake banks is varied, abundant and of a mediterranean sort: cypress trees, laurel trees, camellias, azaleas. rhododendrons, magnolias, and palm trees. In some more wet and sheltered areas we can even find tropical and sub-tropical vegetation. In Tremezzo for example Villa Carlotta is famous for its splendid park where the visitor can admire all sorts of flowers and rare plants; during the warmer seasons we can see azaleas, cacti, austral ferns, palm trees citron trees and orange trees. The growing of grape-vines and of olive trees is not common because of the geological nature of the land and one can find these in certain areas only. Along the banks of the lake, certain localities recall a tradition of olive growing: along the west bank there is a zone in Tremezzo which in dialect is called "Zoca de L'Oli" while on the east bank we have Oliveto Lario and Olcio. On the mountain slopes around the lake there are numerous chestnut woods and higher up one finds pasture-land where narcissuses and lilies of the valley grow. Lake vegetation is sparce and is found only in areas like the Pian di Spagna as there are neither pools nor areas of still water along the lake banks.
