The Tuscany / Massa Carrara Province region

Tiny hilltop towns, sun-drenched hillsides, a rolling countryside and enchanting little hamlets hidden along ancient streets and pathways, Tuscany is an adventure into the past of castles, fortresses, walled towns, ancient olive groves and vineyards and traditions that are honoured from generation to generation.
Fashion, cars, design, good food and wine, amazing art, mild weather and beautiful landscapes. When one travels the world it is easy to see the influence Italian lifestyle has on modern cities. Breakfast with a cappuccino or (to the horror of many Italians-cappuccino after dinner!), scooters, pasta or a tomato and mozzarella panino for lunch; wood-fired pizzas and even olive oil tasting events. All of these are attempts to recreate a part of Italian life in a different context - a more than ample indication of how appealing this lifestyle is to a diverse range of people.
The Licciana Nardi / Tavernelle, Tuscany area
Tuscany is everybody's favourite travel destination, and the Lunigiana is the part of Tuscany that's undiscovered.
Lunigiana is the part of Tuscany that links up with the Gulf of Poets and Liguria to the west and Emilia-Romagna, gastronomic heart of Italy, to the north. Whilst it is dominated by the Apuan Alps (from which Michelangelo insisted that his marble had to come) and the Appennines (made famous by Eric Newby in his book 'Love and War in the Appennines'), it has beautiful sandy beaches on its coast at places such as Marinella and Marina di Massa. It truly does have mountains, rock pools, sun and sea.
Lunigiana is a small homogeneous region that offers a mild climate and a sweet atmosphere, perfect for resting and holidays. The millennial story of its history are visible, from the mysterious “statue stele” to the roman ruins, from old churches and medieval castles to the baroque palaces.
Lunigiana has been untouched by the damages of rampant industrialization and urbanization and even today, the environment has preserved the rural and pristine character of yesteryear: life in this charming countryside moves at an old-fashioned pace marked by sheer peace and quiet.
This lifestyle is influenced not only by the environment but also by the area's wonderful location neither isolated nor remote. Not even the highway running along its border and Sunday tourists taking this thoroughfare to head to the coasts toward the valley have altered this unique environment.
A magical holiday in harmony with nature!

Guestbook for Depadance
"A great little hideaway in a quiet village, perfect for a couple wanting to get away from it all for a bit. The mountain scenery is beautiful and climate more refreshingly cool than in the cities and by the coast.
To get to the apartment you have to walk through the main palazzo, which was empty when we were there, so it felt like we had a whole palace to ourselves, very grand! (the rooms in the main palazzo are spectacular). The apartment had been recently refurbished so everything was clean and tidy. The stairs to the mezzanine bedroom are very steep so probably not good for very young children. The private terrace and pool added to the get-away-from-it-all kind of feel.
It proved to be an excellent base for exploring Lunigiana, although you would certainly need a car. Pisa airport is a 1 hour drive away and the nearby railway station at Aulla gives easy access to the larger attractions, Firenze, Pisa, Parma, 5terre etc. There is a direct train from Aulla to the 5terre for 5 euro, this includes return journey and unlimited travel between all the villages. There are good restaurants in the nearby towns and villages; lunch at Montagne Verde is a must (be careful driving back down the road!). One of the local dishes is testeroli al pesto, bits of pancake covered with green pesto, highly recommended. If you are arriving later at night I would advise that you get some essentials on-route (supermarkets at Aulla).
As the area is still fairly free of tourists the restaurants don't tend to stay open late. We had a great time and will certainly be adding this to our list of places-where-we-must-go-again!" Sue&Steve Derbyshire UK
