The Tuscany region
Tavernelle is located in Lunigiana, the most northern region of Tuscany. Nestled in stunning mountain scenery, it is an easy twenty minute drive from the A15 motorway and the train station at Aulla, and just 40 minutes from the coastal villages of Lerici and the spectacular Cinque Terre. It is accessible from two major airports: 1 hour's drive from Pisa airport and 2 hours from Milan Linate. Tavernelle is a superb base for Tuscan sighteseeing, located 1 hour's drive from Lucca; and 1 hour 30 mins from the renaissance wonders of Florence and Siena. The 3000sq kilometres of surrounding forest provides some of the best trekking in northern Italy, and the ski slopes at Prato Spilla are 25 minutes' drive. For trekkers, the ski lifts provide summer access to the high paths, or sentieri above Lagestrello.
Tavernelle lies on the Tavarone river, in the heart of historic northern Tuscany, set against a backdrop of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park. The village boasts a bar and, two excellent restaurants, a weekend pizzeria, a butcher's shop/grocery store. The river offers swimming in cold rock pools, sunning and scrambling upstream through the eddies and falls.
Summer weekends bring heightened activity, with the ballo liscio, or 'slow dance' held beside the bar attracting all-comers. Al fresco dining reaches a climax during the annual Festa della Trota, usually held on the first weekend in August. The village is transformed into a medieval marketplace, and feasting takes place noon and evening in the village park. Visitors and locals alike throng to this annual festa to sample the best local fare and wine, trout, lamb, pastas and tortas.

"A very special getaway!"
The area is beautiful; rustic; scenic; tranquil.
The clean accommodation is perfectly small inside with everything you would need for comfort, dining and entertainment. So pleased to NOT have a TV!
The balcony is a dream come true complete with furniture, built in bbq, plants and with the best views in the village.
The owners are extremely helpful, willing to answer all of my pre holiday questions immediately and their guest information at Casa Giulia is very informative catering for those who wish to explore by car or on foot.
The welcome basket that greeted us on our arrival was abundant, more than we would have ever imagined.
It's a place you want to be in to watch the seasons. We could have stayed for much longer than our 10 days. We came away refreshed and revitalised.
Sheila and Michael, you have a gem of a place. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I am absolutely delighted that you enjoyed your holiday so much. Casa Giulia is a very relaxing place and I am very pleased that you found it so. It is great to know that you found Casa Giulia so comfortable, clean and welcoming. I will pass on your comments to our housekeeper.....she will be very happy. It will be a pleasure to welcome you back and you can relax on the terrace once again!

"Nature & relax"
Very nice place, with a beautiful panoramic views from the huge patio area where there's also a barbecue. Silence and the place far away from city lights give you dark nights to watch the stars.… More
I am absolutely delighted that you liked Casa Giulia, Tavernelle and the area so much. "Interesting, but .."
This apartment is located in a medieval village. The apartment on the whole is good, although in need of a bit of TLC. We came to this apartment based on previous reviews, but have to say we were qui… More
This review came as a complete surprise as we had spoken to our guest during his stay and he had intimated that everything was to his satisfaction. Also, they had met with our housekeeper after their arrival and had not contacted her with any complaints. Had they done so, it would have been possible to address some of the issues raised in a more timely manner.
To date, feedback from our clients has been very largely positive which contributed to our sense of shock at the range and extent of negative comment. Tavernelle is a medieval town in rural Tuscany. The streets are too narrow for motorised street cleaning so the Comune relies on old fashioned street sweepers who do their best, as do the villagers who love Tavernelle.
The apartment is small and intimate with a large living space and a very large 360 degree terrace. This is made clear in the advertisement, the photos and correspondence with clients.
The comments regarding the cleanliness of the bathroom are far more significant and disturbing and might have been dealt with more satisfactorily had they been raised during their stay. We have thoroughly reviewed the cleaning procedures with our housekeeper and can give our assurance that the apartment will be spotless for all visitors. It should also be noted that the housekeeper rejects the assertions made.
One further detail. The date on the jar of sugo was not the best-before date, but the date of manufacture. It was still in date.
We appreciate the positive aspects of the review, and will be happy to welcome them back to Casa Giulia.

"A Romantic Idyll in the real Tuscany."
A wonderful experience overall. The accommodation was exactly as described, clean, well equipped and homely with the most amazing views. What a delight to sit on the terrace listening to the birds and the babbling brook and gazing at the village and mountains.
If you're looking for nightlife and shopping, go elsewhere! But if you crave tranquility, history and beauty, this is the place for you.
The village of Tavernelle is so unspoiled that we felt we had stepped back in time- but with all the mod cons! The people were friendly and helpful, and made every effort to make us feel at home, praising our efforts to use a few words of Italian.
My booking experience was quick and efficient, all my questions were answered and the owners went the extra mile to ensure that my holiday had everything I needed.
The local food and wine are excellent, especially the family-run bar and restaurant in the village, which combines friendly and efficient service with quality local cuisine.
A tiny note of caution- as the village is relatively unchanged from medieval times, parking is a short distance from Casa Giulia so make sure your suitcases have wheels!!
For value for money, relaxation and a real taste of Tuscany I would highly recommend Casa Guilia, and I hope to go back sometime.
Many thanks for such a fullsome review. I am so glad that you loved Casa Giulia and Tavernelle so much. It really is a special place and also the people are so friendly and anxious to help. I will pass on your compliments to the chef and family at the restaurant. They are always anxious to serve good authentic Italian food to their guests and delighted to know that they have done so! I agree the views from the terrace never disappoint! It is a wonderful place to sit and relax. I hope you got to see the shooting stars and the fireflies. I hope you do come back both the village and I will be delighted to welcome you.

"beautiful surroundings - wonderful holiday"
My husband and I were so very surprised at how lovely a place Casa Guilia was, very authentic, clean with the most beautiful panoramic views from the huge patio area where we enjoyed many barbecues. It was peaceful, romantic and so very relaxing. Would highly recommend.
Many thanks for your lovely comments. I am really pleased that you liked Casa Giulia and Tavernelle so much and that you found it comfortable, clean and welcoming. I also love a BBQ on the terrace or just sitting and taking in the views. I hope to welcome you back to enjoy it all again!

"In one word - Fabulous!!"
Great location, lovely apartment. A bit of challenge the spiral staircase with suitcases a bit quirky. Outside space fab with brilliant views, had planned to have a bbq but got rained off at last minute but still managed as the little oven worked wonderfully. A real bonus having wifi as was able to research where to go each day.
Bar/restaurant in village (the only one) do lovely meals especially pizza night on a saturday and sunday. Wine really cheap!!
Only one slight problem was the mattress seem to slope into the middle.
I am delighted that your stay at Casa Giulia was so enjoyable. Also really pleased that you liked the terrace so much. Pity that it rained as a BBQ on the terrace is quite unforgettable! I appreciate your comment on the mattress. We ourselves slept there at the end of the season and have since changed it. Many thanks.

"We paid a lot and got no a lot"
Given the previous positive reviews of Casa Giulia my girlfriend and I were both extremely disappointed with our experience. Arriving late on Saturday night, we were told that the key to the apartment… More
It is a great pity that our client allowed these minor inconveniences to spoil what was otherwise a good holiday in a beautiful location.
We do welcome all informed comment as a means of maintaining our high standards, but regrettably this review contains a number of factual inaccuracies which we wish to address sequentially.
1. The 'chance encounter' referred to on their late arrival (midnight) was in fact with our housekeeper bearing the key to the apartment.
2.The welcome basket was on the table and contained wine, pasta, bread and sugo.
3.The boiler was malfunctioning (a blown valve) and the plumber arrived at 2.00pm on Sunday, approximately four hours after our clients' call to us. He immediately rectified the problem, and our client confirmed to us that they had 'gallons of hot water.'
4. We offer WiFi on request. This client did not request it, but the modem was nevertheless left connected and the password available. We advised him on Sunday morning to re-set the modem and directed him to the user ID and password. As far as we were concerned, this was successful as we heard nothing more.
5. The shops in Tavernelle, Licciana Nardi and Monti were open for their normal trading hours as shown in our information folder, and displayed on the 'orario' outside each premises. Perhaps our client overlooked the long Italian siesta!
6.His comment that 'the owners have real issues with their property...' is incomprehensible and unfair. His complaints were immediately resolved
and he states that he did find the apartment nice, the terrace a 'sun-trap' and also well located for travel throughout Tuscany.
7.His final comment that he would 'book elsewhere' because of the shower is meaningless as he confirmed on the afternoon of his complaint that there was plentiful hot water. To reiterate, the boiler problem was resolved on Sunday afternoon four hours after their call.
We regret that this client did not fully enjoy his stay at Casa Giulia. Perhaps he may visit again and revise his impressions.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Casa Giulia so much.
