About the home

Les Muriers is situated in an area where the Corbieres and the Minervois meet, midway between the historic cities of Carcassonne and Narbonne. The house is only 5 minutes from the Canal Du Midi and 30 minutes from a number of beautiful long sunny Mediterranean beaches.

Escales is known within the area for its 11th century Roman Church and Watch Tower. Lezignan (7 minutes away) has a host of shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. Both Lezignan and Olonzac (10 minutes away) have authentic, lively weekly markets. A ten minute drive away is the beautiful canal side village of Homps, with a recreational lake ideal for sunbathing and swimming. It also has a cafe bar on the site with boat hire too. Along the canal at Homps there are some wonderful cafe/bars and restaurants.

The central location of the village, with its fast access to main roads makes it a superb base to explore the area:The Canal Du Midi; The famous medieval walled city of Carcassonne (both Unesco World Heritage sites); The Cathar Castles; Mediterranean beaches and even a day trip to Barcelona is within easy reach. The ground floor of the house consists of a living room with open plan kitchen and dining area, one double bedroom and a bathroom with separate toilet. Both the living room and kitchen have terrace doors opening onto the gardens. Open stairs lead to the first floor with a double bedroom, a large bedroom with twin beds and a third bedroom with two double sofabeds. This third bedroom also doubles as an upstairs lounge room, with TV, DVD and Wii console. Upstairs there is also a second family bathroom with bath and shower.

Both sides of the house have a lovely garden, completely landscaped with outdoor lighting, for the lovely warm evenings. The gardens offer plenty of sun, shade and shelter and have several natural stone seating areas for you to enjoy a glass of wine.

The large garden is 200m2 and completely walled, making it safe for children. There are two mulberry trees in the centre of the garden offering shade and a hammock to rest in. At the rear of the house the garden is smaller and more secluded. There is a lovely seating area built into an old ruin which is perfect for taking advantage of the morning sun over breakfast.

Les Muriers is located in a private road devoid of traffic. The village has a town hall, school, post office, bakery and grocery shop, as well as a weekly pizza and butchers van. Next to the house are a tennis court, basketball and football area. In the summer, there is a weekly petanque competition between the villagers, which offers a barbecue and plenty of chance to mix with the locals. There is a new beautiful restaurant which has just been built in the village, only a minutes walk from the house.

Les Muriers is privileged to sit in a region of wonderful vineyards and therefore wine! The local wine can be purchased from the co-operative a couple of miles away for a few euros a bottle and is wonderful tasting wine!

Les Muriers is fitted out to the very highest standard .One of the bedrooms upstairs has two double sofa beds, with a 37inch TV, Wii and DVD, perfect for keeping the children entertained.
We include all high quality bedding and towels and in addition, beach towels.
UK Sky TV is available as well as the additional DVD player upstairs.

There is a washing machine, clothes horse, an iron and ironing board for laundry. There is a hairdryer and GHD straighteners, so there is no need to have excess baggage on your hand luggage! There is a top quality Nespresso coffee machine in the kitchen as well as a raclette for dinner parties. We provide plenty of UK to Europe electric plug adaptors for all your electrical needs.

All beds come with top quality bedding - duvets for the colder evenings and fans for the warmer nights.
We also provide a cool box and picnic bag for the days you spend away from the house!
In fact..every mod con you can think of...Les Muriers provides it!
There is also a travel cot available, if needed.

The lower floor of the house is suitable for wheelchair users, having the living space, a bedroom and a bathroom.

Further details outdoors:
Outside the house has a small garden shed where you will find: 4 adult mountain bikes, 2 childrens bikes and a 'tag-a-long' for younger children. There are also tennis rackets, footballs, blow up beach toys, and a BBQ.

There is a large hardwood table and seating for dining outside (for 6 people), with 2 additional folding wooden chairs.

There are four wooden loungers for reclining in the sunshine as well as a hammock which is easily fastened to the Mulberry tree's.

Everything is included in the cost of the rental, there are no hidden charges eg cleaning, utilities etc.

Conditions

Sorry no pets. Les Muriers is non smoking.
A deposit of 25% of the rental fee is required on conformation of booking.Balance of rental to be paid no later than three weeks prior to arrival date. A refundable deposit of £500 is also required no less than three weeks before arrival. Refund will be made within 10 days of your departure, subject to a property inspection.

The Mulberries

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

The landscape of the Languedoc Roussillon, and especially of Les Corbieres is amongst the most spectacular in France. It boasts a long coastline of the sparkling Mediterranean and has beautiful sandy beaches and fishing villages. Narbonne,Valras,Serignan plage are popular and suitable for children. Leucate also has a beautiful beach and has a port selling fresh oysters and mussels in the bars and restaurants.

Skiing is less than an hour away in the breathtaking Pyrenees, the nearest being Camurac.
Take time to visit the Canal Du Midi, less than 10 minutes away from the house. Sit and enjoy the boats and barges pass whilst having a beer!

Only 12 k away is Minerve,classified as one of the prettiest villages in France.
Carcassonne is also a must with the walled city.
Many local vineyards offer free wine tours and wine tasting, its great fun and very interesting to see how they turn grapes into wine.

The Lezignan-Corbieres / Escales area

The nearest shops and supermarkets are found in nearby Lezignan, 5 minutes drive from Escales. market day in Lezignan is Wednesday, the streets are closed for the market ( 8am till 2pm).There are many bars and restaurants but please remember most shops in France close between 12 noon and 2pm.

Puicheric is nearby and offers Canoeing, bike Hire and a Market on Saturdays.

Many local towns and villages all within a short drive offer countless bars and restaurants, for example Rubia, Lagrasse, La Caunette, Caepstang and Homps on the Canal Du Midi. Minerve is an ancient town built into the rock that is a MUST see on any holiday to this region (15 minutes from the house).

A freshwater bathing lake in Homps is 7 minutes away, or one of a number of freshwater rivers is Roquebrun, and is well worth a day out.

About an hour away is Collioure, one of the most picturesque fishing villages on the coast. The Festival St Vincent in August is spectacular, with amazing fireworks!

Another of our favourites is Leucate Plage and port. Close to this is the picturesque village of Fitou, with it's wine caves and wonderful wine tasting.

You can drive from Calais to Escales in around 8/9 hours. Tolls are arond 70/80 euro's each way. Route planning information can be found at www.theAA.com

Flights from all major UK airports, Ryanair run regular flights in and out of Carcassonne Airport from Porto, Glasgow, Cork, Dublin, Leeds-Bradford, East Midlands, Liverpool, Stansted,Brussels, Carcassonne is 24 kilometres from the house.

By train with Eurostar from Waterloo or Ashford to Paris or Lille (1 - 2 hours) and SNCF to Narbonne or Perpignan (5 - 6 hours)

Other airports include Beziers 45 mins, Narbonne 25 mins, Perpignan 40 mins and Montpellier 70 mins, Gerona (Spain) is less than 90 mins away.
