The Swiss Alps / Vaud/Lake Geneva/Swiss Alps region

Leysin dates from before medieval times and its history is both long and varied. Situated on the south-facing slopes of the Tour d'Ai, it is one of the sunniest villages in Switzerland, as shown by its location in one of the premier Swiss wine-growing areas. There are impressive views of Lake Geneva and the Jura mountains, the Rhone Valley, Dents du Midi, Diablerets Glacier, Mont Blanc, Eiger and the Matterhorn. The village is at an altitude of 1250m with the cable cars reaching to the local skiing areas at 2300m. With its origins stretching back to the 6th century, Leysin has a mixture of both old & new buildings, many of them in the classic Swiss chalet style.

Although the prime holiday season is in the winter, spring, summer & autumn are attractive times to visit with many fine walks on the 40km of trails though the fields and woods, admiring the local fauna & flora. Leysin has been awarded the "Families Welcome" quality certificate.

Leysin gained fame in the 19th & 20th centuries as the centre for the cure of tuberculosis and the origins of some of the TB clinics can still be seen. Nowadays, Leysin is an important centre for family skiing and snowboarding

With the Japanese Kumon Leysin Academy, the SIU American College of Switzerland and other private schools, Leysin maintains a cosmopolitan air. Although Leysin is part of the French-speaking Suisse Romande area, English is widely spoken.
