The Swiss Alps / Vaud/Lake Geneva/Swiss Alps region

Leysin, one of the highest mountain villages in the French-speaking canton of Vaud, is south-facing, situated at 1260m, overlooking the Rhône Valley. Originally well-known for its unique climate, and claiming to be the sunniest village in Switzerland, with low humidity, it is shielded from any cold north winds by the mountains.
Leysin is small enough to be exceptionally friendly, and part of its charm is the busy local farming community. Many of Switzerland's finest wines are produced in the neighbouring vineyards, with excellent restaurants and shops in the village and surrounding district, featuring local produce, with an emphasis on wine, cheese, honey and mushrooms. Leysin is a unique village in an exceptional situation with excellent transport options.
The Leysin area
In the centre of the ski area, both in winter and summer, at 2200m, is the revolving restaurant at Berneuse, with exceptional views to Mont Blanc, Lake Geneva and Les Diablerets. Leysin's museum is situated in the centre of the old village, in La Fromagerie, a well-know local restaurant featuring cheese-making sessions each evening.
Within easy reach of the village is Château d'Oex, Gstaad, the castle at Aigle with a unique wine museum, and on the shores of Lake Geneva, the Château de Chillon at Montreux.

Air connections to Geneva are excellent, especially from the UK. In addition to the budget airlines (contact the owners for details on low cost flight and car hire websites) it is essential to check fares on British Airways and Swiss - both airlines offer competitive rates on this route, frequently undercutting the no-frills operators. It can also be important to avoid peak-travel times and flights can be busy over winter weekends..
Geneva airport offers an excellent range of car hire options (check to see whether your airline offers special car hire rates in addition to the specialist companies) and Geneva airport railway station has direct connections through Geneva City to Aigle (Leysin's nearest mainline station) throughout the day. At Aigle one changes to the classic mountain cog train for the ascent to Leysin.
Leysin is 1hr 30mins from Geneva by road, and 1hr 55mins by train.
