The Kent region
The Isle of Sheppey is an island off the northern coast of Kent, England in the Thames Estuary, some 46 miles to the east of London. The island forms part of the local government district of Swale. Sheppey is derived from the ancient Saxon "Sceapige", meaning isle of sheep, and even today the extensive marshes which make up a considerable proportion of the island provide grazing for large flocks of sheep. The island, like much of north Kent, comprises London Clay and is a plentiful source of fossils. The ground is mainly low-lying, but at the Mount near Minster rises to 250 feet above sea level.
The island is accessed by the spectacular Sheppey Bridge Crossing. Once on the Island, it is fairly quiet with a few tourist / beach resorts, caravan and chalet sites.
The summer months can get quite busy, but out of season it is perfect for a quiet relaxing break and long walks in the spectacular countryside and unspoilt beaches.
Leysdown on Sea is a traditional sea side small town. it has an award winning beach with lifeguards during peak season. The promenade has a selection of amusement arcades to keep the family entertained. There are a few family pubs and clubs and lots of cafes and takeaways plus a few smaller supermarkets.
For bigger supermarkets you will need to head towards Sheerness where you can find a new retail park with Morrisons, Sports Direct, B&M , Poundland, KFC and Iceland.
Nearby Minster has a spectacular shingle beach with views across to Southend on Sea.
The area is great for walking or cycling
