The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting. Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens. The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Leyburn / Middleham area
Renowned for its history and race horses, the attractive Wensleydale town of Middleham connects much of its history with its Norman castle, dating from 1190 and with a keep second in size only to the Tower of London. The town's charming market square has been partially cobbled and offers a wide range of shops, pubs and places to eat, whilst the bustling market town of Leyburn is just a short drive away and offers a variety of great shops and pubs. Visitors can also explore The Forbidden Corner, a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and surprises set amidst four acres of grounds, which provides a fun day out for all the family. The village is also within easy driving distance of York, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and Heritage Coast.

Guestbook for 1581 - In and Out Cottage
The location was amazing, very friendly village. Perfect romantic getaway. Pretty setting with roaring log fire, and ideally located to explore the wonders of Yorkshire and all it has to offer. We would highly recommend to friends and family. The variety of eateries and drinking establishments in such a small village was delightful. When it comes to good service and food try out the White Swan and the Bull for the warm welcome.

,Easy access to beautiful scenery with lots of easy walks. Lovely and quiet without being isolated. It was nice also to arrive to a warm cottage.

,In and Out Cottage is in a quiet location, just the right size for the two of us and well equipped. A good selection of eating/ drinking places in a small town.

,The village and location were good for visiting the Yorkshire Dales. The bed was magnificent. The cottage was unusual over 2 floors with 2 doors. Good value.
