House | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
Rowan House is a particularly well appointed family home, sleeping 7 to 8 guests in comfort. Nothing is left to chance - a cozy sitting room with open log fire, a games room with console and beanbags for our younger guests, and wifi is available throughout the property. We have provided a real cook's kitchen; open plan to the main living area (with exposed green oak beams), with modern oak units and hardwood worktops, an electric range cooker, fridge / freezer, dishwasher, microwave etc; the stone flagged floors in the kitchen and living area are cool in the summer, but thanks to underfloor heating, warm in winter too! Plenty of room for all the family, the master bedroom has a king size bed and en-suite bathroom, there is a further bathroom with shower upstairs, and a shower room downstairs too. The fourth bedroom is a single one, with a full size single pull out bed for an eighth guest (proper mattress!)
Outside offers lovely gardens to the front and rear, with ample off road parking for up to three vehicles. Garden furniture and barbecue are provided, with two patios - one by the kitchen and living area, and a second, secluded, south facing patio to catch the last of the evening sun; perfect for "sundowners"! Guests also enjoy the use of three acres of paddocks (shared with our neighbour's friendly horses) - perfect for football, picnicking, or for giving the dogs a run. Oil fired central heating and an open fire to snuggle up to will keep you warm, even in the depths of winter!
The house is an ideal base for all sorts of activities; there are lovely walks right for the door, including the deer park of Hornby Castle, designed by a pupil of Capability Brown, and offering open access for walkers. Cyclists can explore the Yorkshire stage of the Tour de France 2014 passes close by. Within 10 miles there are golf courses at Akebar Park, Bedale, Catterick, Masham and Northallerton. We offer plenty of secure indoor storage for your bikes, golf clubs, fishing gear etc.
We are a military family, currently stationed in Belgium, and Rowan House has been our family home since 2001. With plenty of space for family groups sharing special occasions, the house offers a nice blend of sociable, open plan space and separate rooms allowing extra privacy.
Please note that Stag and Hen Groups looking for a party venue should look elsewhere; sorry!

About this location
The Yorkshire region
History Lovers will enjoy Abbeys at Fountains and Jervaulx, as well as Norman castles at Middleham and Richmond (and our "local" castle and deer park at the edge of the village). Animal lovers will enjoy the horses behind the house, but highly recommended is a trip to Middleham, the "Newmarket of the North", 30 minutes away. Masham is a must. Home to Theakstons and Black Sheep Breweries, it is around 20 minutes from Rowan House, and has a beautiful Georgian Market Place with antique shops and art galleries.
Children (and adults) will be thoroughly entertained by The Forbidden Corner - Yorkshire's strangest visitor attraction. Thorp Perrow, with its arboretum, bird of prey, and animal centre is close at hand, and for thrill seekers, Lightwater Valley Theme Park is around half an hour away.
The area is ideal for lovers of "The Great Outdoors", with excellent walking and cycling available from the door. In 2014 we will welcome Le Grand Depart, the opening stage of The Tour De France, and as the route is already published, cyclists can start practicing the route now!
Hackforth is a quiet, rural village in Lower Wensleydale. Rowan House has pretty views to the front, and views across farmland to the rear. Rowan House is within a few hundred yards of Hornby Castle Deer Park; designed in the eighteenth century by a pupil of Capability Brown, it offers visitors opportunities to walk and enjoy spotting Hornby Castle's deer and bison herds. There is a pub in the village - The Greyhound Inn, which serves food.
The nearest town is Bedale, the "Gateway to the Dales", 4 miles away. There is a market on Tuesdays, and the Market Place has a Co-Op supermarket, banks, pubs, excellent butchers and greengrocers, as well as several pleasant boutiques and gift shops.
Racing fans will enjoys days out at Catterick, Thirsk and Ripon (within 30 minutes), and also York, Wetherby, Sedgefield and Newcastle within an hour.

"Perfect venue for a winter weekend family reunion."
Rowan House was the venue for our Ruby Wedding celebration with our two daughters and their young families - one from Tyneside - one from West Yorkshire. The house is lovely and provides everything (& more) one could need for such an occasion.
It is large , comfortable . beautifully furnished and well maintained.
The kitchen enabled the preparation of a wonderful celebration gourmet dinner and our 3 young grandsons were entertained throughout the weekend by the facilities of the games room.
We all ate a wonderful Sunday lunch in the local pub just around the corner !
We hope to return sometime in warmer weather and enjoy the wonderful outdoors facilities of both the House and the area. The herds of deer in the nearby parkland were a spectacular sight !

Cottage beautiful, very clean and tidy, very well equipped, a home from home really. More than enough room for 8 adults. Five minutes from the A1, good distance from all of the attractions the area has offer. Housekeeper was really nice and always on hand to answer our queries! We would definitely stay again.
