Northern England region
The Yorkshire Dales has outstanding scenery, a diversity of wildlife habitats, a rich cultural heritage and peacefulness. In 1954, 1769 square kilometres was designated a national park in recognition of these most important qualities.
The Dales lie astride the Pennines in the north of England in the counties of North Yorkshire and Cumbria There are over 20 main dales, differing much from each other in character and atmosphere. To the south of the area lies a highly populated industrial area while to the north thinly settled uplands stretch to the Tees and beyond. About 20,000 people live in the scattered farms, villages and small market towns of the Dales.
People have lived in the area for over 10,000 years and have left their mark on the landscape in the form of ancient settlement sites, disused mineral workings and the patchwork of dry-stone walls and barns so typical of the Dales. Early farmers cleared the woodland and developed the fields.
Sheep on the fells, hay meadows in the valley bottoms: this has long been the way of life for Dales farmers, resulting in a landscape cherished by residents and visitors alike. However, both the landscape and traditional farming methods are now under threat from changing agricultural economics.
Each of the Yorkshire Dales has a different character. The Southern Dales are less remote, and attract day visitors as well as staying guests. The Northern Dales provide rugged scenery for walking and sightseeing. In the West, the villages and small towns have their own charm. Throughout the Dales there is a variety of accommodation and attractions which can keep any visitor fully engaged.
The Yorkshire Dales is worth a visit at any time of year - try a snug country pub with an open fire in the winter months, a luxury hotel for a spring break, a cottage for a summer base, or a bed and breakfast for an autumn weekend. Wherever you go or stay you will find a fascinating landscape and many things to see and do.
Middleham is a great location to base yourself for a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. It is within two miles of the crossroads of the main A684 and A6108 roads into Wensleydale – one of the most famous of the Yorkshire Dales.
The A1 arterial road is about 14 miles away at Leeming Bar, and major railway stations can be found at Darlington and Northallerton (both well served from London in around two hours).
Middleham is an important horseracing training centre, with no less than 15 training establishments in and around the township. Top names include Mark Johnston, Ben Haslam and Micky Hammond.

An absolutely fantastic property. Wonderfully comfortable, beautifully furnished and appointed, and in an outstanding location (four pubs all serving fabulous Black Sheep beer, not to mention two great takeaways, all within walking distance, yet still a picturesque and peaceful location - life doesn't get any better!). Owners and managers a pleasure to deal with. A perfect destination for a get-together with family and friends. Middleham Castle directly opposite the property - stunning views from the house. Short drive to Aysgarth Falls and Wensleydale. Thank you so much for a great holiday.
Many thanks, it really is great that the village is so good too!

The Scholl house is a fantastic place to stay with a group of friends. This was our secound trip there this year. Village is small but perfect.
Best Pub is Richard III. Very welcoming landlord.
White Swan best for pub food.
Chippy in the village is a must...if you are a large group, drop your order off and arrange a time to collect......
The house itself is huge, great kitchen for cooking for larger numbers, loads of pots, pans, glasses and everything else you need.
Open fire in the living room for those winter nights.
The furniture in the house is a bit old and warn but to be honest it adds to the charm and the atmosphere.
I would recomend this place for a large family or group of friends.
The house and village are quiet which makes it a great place.
The local shop is very very well stocked for anything you forget.

We were there to celebrate my 60th - and ranged in age from 4 to 70 . The house is amazing with probably the best equipped kitchen we have ever come across in a rental property. Since we ranged from couples to small family groups , the bed and bathroom layouts allowed us to meet everyone's requirements and it has to be said that the bed linen and towels were of a really high standard . On arrival and departure we met the people responsible for maintaining and cleaning the property and they were very welcoming and helpful . An outstanding property .
