The master bedroom includes an impressive four-poster bed, with the second bedroom configurable as a single, double or twin room on request. Northern England region
Lonely Planet recently voted 'God's Own County' as the third best holiday destination in The World! A bold statement, but when you consider the history and beauty of the region as well as the welcoming nature of its occupants you become to realise the origins of this accolade.
The Yorkshire Dales are the heart of the county, providing dramatic scenery and beautiful authentic villages. If your'e looking for an active holiday this is one of the best places in England for mountain biking, walking, caving, and cycling. You can even try the route of the Tour de France, which passes just 100 yards from Dale Cottage. There are over 2,000km of paths and bridleways to explore in The Dales, and Dale Cottage is equipped with plenty of route guides to get you started.
If you'd rather try something a little more relaxing then the Yorkshire Dales has lots to offer. Steam railways, authentic country pubs, museums, and heritage sites are plentiful throughout the region. Castles, waterfalls, breweries, monasteries, beautiful villages and even a theme park are all within easy driving distance from the cottage.
The famous waterfalls at Aysgarth are just a couple of minute's drive from the cottage, and a great photograph opportunity as well as providing a gentle stroll around the local area.
The town of Hawes is just 15 minute's drive away and has plenty to offer. The Dales Countryside Museum is a great day out, as is the Wensleydale Creamery.
While in the Hawes area it's also worth visiting Hardraw Force, either a small drive or enjoyable walk from the town. With a single drop of 100 feet from a rocky overhang it is claimed to be England's highest unbroken waterfall. It was also the setting for a memorable scene in the film Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves.
Leyburn is the cottage's closest town and has great facilities including many shops and a farmer's market. Leyburn has one of the highest market places in England, with breathtaking views across the Dales countryside. Leyburn is also famous for it Shawl walk, where legend has it Mary Queen of Scots dropped her shawl while escaping from nearby Bolton Castle.
Leyburn is also a stop along the excellent Wensleydale Railway. Trains run between Leeming Bar and Redmire, which is walking distance from the cottage. Trains are usually heritage diesels and rail cars from the 1960s, which offer excellent views along the route. Steam trains also run occasionally.
The famous Cauldron Falls at West Burton are just a couple of minute's walk from the cottage and provide an excellent photo opportunity as well as a relaxing waterside picnic spot. A little further along the valley is the village of West Witton, which includes the excellent Wenseydale Heifer restaurant as well as shops and pubs.
If traditional pub food takes your fancy the local area has plenty to offer. As well as the West Burton's own Fox and Hounds there are many local villages with excellent pubs for food and ales. Inside the cottage there is a comprehensive guide to the local area, including suggestions for eating out, walks, rides and attractions.
