Dartmoor is an area of moorland in south Devon, England. Protected by National Park status as Dartmoor National Park, it covers 954 square kilometres (368 sq mi).

The granite which forms the uplands dates from the Carboniferous Period of geological history. The moorland is capped with many exposed granite hilltops known as tors, providing habitats for Dartmoor wildlife. The highest point is High Willhays, 621 m (2,037 ft) above sea level. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeology.

Dartmoor is managed by the Dartmoor National Park Authority, whose 22 members are drawn from Devon County Council, local district councils and Government.

Parts of Dartmoor have been used as military firing ranges for over 200 years. The public enjoy extensive access rights to Dartmoor (including restricted access to the firing ranges) and it is a popular tourist destination. The organisation responsible for tourism on Dartmoor is the Dartmoor Partnership.

Lewdown

Brentor is a village in West Devon, England. The village is dominated by the hill of Brent Tor, topped by the village's church.

The origins of the name Brentor are old Devonian, a Brythonic Celtic language related to Cornish, Welsh and Breton and spoken in Devon until the early Middle Ages 'Bryn' and 'tor' meaning 'hill of the rock tower'.

At Lydford, 4 miles to the north-east, there is the remarkable Lydford Gorge with its spectacular waterfall and riverside walk, together with Lydford Castle and prison, a village pub, an italian restaurant and the renowned Dartmoor Inn gastropub.

There are further village shops and pubs in the nearby villages of Mary Tavy and Milton Abbot and also pubs in Peter Tavy and Lamerton. Many of the local pubs feature in "The Good Pub Guide".

The scenic stannary market town of Tavistock (voted best Market Town in 2004) lies 5 miles to the south and offers a wide selection of unusual gift shops, boutiques and delicatessens in addition to the more usual supermarkets and shops. The town possesses a renowned pannier market and The Wharf is a popular venue for cinema and the arts.

If you would prefer a change from the rugged vista of Dartmoor, then gorgeous sandy beaches, sailing and other watersports are available at a number of venues along the north and south coasts. Both are easily accessible by car, the closest beaches on the north coast being about 45 minutes away.

Watersports, lakeside walks and a cafe with stunning lakeside views can also be found at the popular Roadford Reservoir about 20 minutes drive to the north. There are also opportunities to fish in the reservoir and the local rivers.

The Eden Project is located about an hour's drive away and the very popular restaurants of celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver and Rick Stein are to be found in Newquay and Padstow respectively.

The A30, 6 miles to the north and the A38, about 18 miles to the south, both facilitate rapid access to Cornwall, Exeter (about 45 minutes away) and the M5 motorway.
