The North West Italy / Italian Riviera/Liguria region
Levanto is a well-known beach resort on the Ligurian Riviera, in the Province of La Spezia near the Cinque Terre. Surrounded by green hills, overlooking a small gulf, this town offers a perfect blend of tradition, history and modern tourist facilities. Besides a variety of classic water sports, this is one of the rare spots in Italy for surfing thanks to the long waves that ripple in the gulf. Levanto is also the starting point for a number of hikes towards the interior and along the coast, towards Bonassola and Monterosso. The history of the city dates back to the Iron Age, but the Middle Ages had a profound influence on the architectural development of the city thanks to the Malaspina family, and their Castle, dominating the gulf, still stands today. Another critical influence was the domination of Genova, during which period further architectural enhancements were carried out, including the city walls, the Loggia, the borgo antico and the Romanic masterpiece the Church of S. Andrea. Today the city hosts a number of gastronomic events, like the Mangialonga and the Gattafin which stem from the rich and delicious culinary tradition of the area.
Levanto area
The most famous attraction is the remarkable world heritage site of the Cinque Terre, literally meaning "five lands" and comprising a string of five delightful villages set amidst vertiginous cliffs, steep terraced vineyards and foaming sea. The villages have a magical seclusion from the outside world, being only tenously accessible by the winding Strada dei Santuari mountain road. Taking a train or boat may be quicker but one of the most beautiful ways to explore the villages is following the stunning coastal path and numerous hiking trails. Each has an individual charm and character so its' well worth seeing as many as possible - the picturesque little port of Riomaggiore, the harbour town of Manarola, loftty and panoramic Corniglia, the beaches and sun drenched terraces of Monterosso and the romantic architecture of Vernazza.
