The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region

Valais has the highest mountain peaks in Switzerland, with many over 4,000 metres. It is well known for its year round mild climate, which provides marvellous conditions for winter skiing and spring/summer/autumn hiking. In addition to Leukerbad, well known resorts in the area include Zermatt, Verbier and Crans-Montana.
The Rhone valley is the best know wine centre of Switzerland, with vineyards climbing the hillsides. Apricots grow abundantly in late summer.
The Leukerbad area
Leukerbad is a hot-spring spa-town nestling in the mountain at the end of the Dala valley, situated at over 1,400m (4,600ft). It is an all-season resort due to its clear blue skies and sunny climate averaging over 300 days per year.
Europe’s largest health spas are located within easy walking distance of the apartment. The two spas are open year round and cater to all tastes, indoor and outdoor pools, sauna and steam baths, massages and beauticians. The town is fed by springs serving 51°C mineral water, which is mixed with the pure cool mountain waters to create the pools of varying temperatures. For full details please click on this link:

Leukerbad is a centre for skiing in the winter and hiking during all other seasons. Two cable cars take you from the town, the Gemmi lift takes you to the Gemmi pass and the Torrent lift up to downhill ski-fields; both lifts climbing to 2,350m.
Leukerbad in Summer
There are hundreds of kilometres of trails heading out from Leukerbad, both for hiking and mountain bike riding, suitable for all standards, from very easy to most challenging. Two sets of ladders, one on the way to Albinen and the other towards Varen add interest to the hikes.
From the Torrent lift one can rent giant scooters, which can be ridden back down to the town. The Gemmi has just opened a new viewing platform, hanging out over a 300m drop, with views down to the town and over the Rhone valley towards the Matterhorn. Leukerbad has one of the most challenging Via Ferratas in Europe.
Don’t miss the Shepherds’ Festival on the last Sunday in July at the top of the Gemmi. Around the Daubensee there are festivities from 10.00 o’clock onward.
Winter in Leukerbad
Whether it is downhill or cross-country skiing, ski-touring, snow-boarding, snowshoeing, tobogganing, ice-skating or curling; Leukerbad has it all! The Torrent lift station is 200m from the apartment, which takes you up to the ski-fields. The apartment has separate storage facilities for skis and other winter equipment.
Year Round in Leukerbad
The Sportsarena offers tennis, badminton and mini golf and in the winter ice skating and curling.
There are many restaurants, with indoor and outdoor seating, within easy walking distance of the apartment, offering a wide variety of menus to choose from. Local specialities include dry-cured meats, alpine cheeses, fondues and raclette.
Wine-tasting is available at a number of outlets in the town and in addition there are free wine-tasting trips, where one can visit the vineyards and the vintners’ cellars, whist sampling the local wines.
There are many events organised by the town, from concerts in the church, alpine music weekends in the restaurants and exhibits at the local gallery, which change monthly.
