The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
Leucate Village is a year round destination, with mild temperatures even in the winter months. On average the area receives 300 days of sunshine a year. We stopped for lunch on our way to Perpignan and ended up buying a house here. It's a traditional French/Catalan village with a big personality and unlike anywhere else I have visited in the South of France. The locals are friendly/welcoming and even in the summer months it's not taken over by tourists. It's an ideal place if you want to discover the real France. Excellent restaurants, cafe's that spill out onto the main village square and the perfect place to people watch. There's also a large wine operative in the village where you can sample the local wines. In Autumn the new season of wines (such as Corbiere, Fitou, Muscat de Riversaltes and Minervois) can be sampled. Leucate Beach (the nearest beach) is uncrowded even in high season and there are several smaller more intimate beaches which are a closely guarded secret (see the visitors book in the house). And La Franqui is the Aude's oldest seaside resort and has various sailing competitions throughout the season, whilst La Plage des Coussoules has wild beaches and sand yachting. This area has a wealth of history and very picturesque with some designated cycling and walking areas. Cap Leucate is also a landmark for migrating birds.
Leucate area
In the winter the temperatures are mild and there are also several large events during low season - Mondial du Vent, Sol y Fiesta, La Generalli. It's also a mecca for watersports including windsurfing, kitesurfing and there's also a wakeboard park closeby. There are also designated cycling routes and excellent walks. And several good fishing areas. The uncrowded beaches are an obvious attraction but this area has alot more to offer............. Wine lovers can also visit various Chateaux situated closeby to sample the local award winning wines. Leucate Village also has it's own traditional market on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings in the Place de la Republique. And shopaholics the larger towns of Perpignan and Narbonne are excellent. Other places worth visiting are Carcassonne (the fortified medieval city), Fitou, Collioure (built upon Roman foundations, the castle was once the summer residence of the Kings of Mallorca), La Franqui. And for the best views for miles around a walk to ancient ruins of the fortified castle (built in 1036) that overlooks Leucate Village is a must; here you can see magnificent views of Les Corbieres, the Salses Lake and Mont Canigou. If you have children there's an African Reserve (Zoo) in Sigean, Go-Karting, a Water Park and Adventure Park all a short drive away. Holiday rental is very scarce to find in the village, so this is a unique opportunity to sample this traditional gem. Port Leucate has thankfully been built a few kilometres away from the village, it's very easy to find properties to rent in this purpose built area, but it's inhabited solely by tourists.
KITESURFING/WINDSURFING For further information on kiting/windsurfing and the weather:- www.chinook-leucate.com (Kitesurfing lessons available in English with Phillippe) www.mondial-du-vent.com http://central.windsurf.free.fr/ - offer windurfing lessons (all levels), in English
WAKEBOARDING - there's a wakeboarding park nearby
BIRD WATCHING - Cap Leucate is a landmark for migrating birds.
SOL Y FIESTA - 17th-19th May 2007 - http://www.leucate.net/Fiesta/programme.html The whole village is overtaken with a three day French/Catalan street carnival spectacular. Dancing, constumes, fireworks, a fantastic weekend for all ages.
