The Normandy / Manche region

The Manche region is often overlooked as people rush down the peninsula on the way south - we have all done it- but now we know better! We think this area is wonderful; the vast west coast beaches are only ten minutes away, the forests and by-ways are perfect for walking and biking. With small towns and seaside villages it is the perfect place to unwind and recharge your batteries. This part of Normandy is a gentle and peaceful region so it is perfect to explore at your leisure.
The Lessay area
Mont-St-Michel, the D-Day landing beaches and the Bayuex tapestry are all within an easy drive.
Closer to home there is the 12th century abbey at Lessay which has a long and very interesting history.
Take a simple stroll down the lane into the forest or a more energetic ride to the beach on the tandem.
Lessay is only 3 minutes away by car and has everything you might need - a good choice of shops and a supermarket. The abbey is famous throughout France and well worth a visit.
In early September the fair of St Croix is held over three days; started by the monks over a thousand years ago, you can buy anything you want there from a tea towel to a cow!
The stunning (and empty) west coast beaches are less then ten minutes away by car.

We came to the Gite having left a five star hotel in Paris so had high expectations. If anything the Gite, service and location was even more impressive! The pictures on the website... more |

This was our first gite holiday and we were not disappointed. A lovely gite for couples in a very quiet lane near the rural village of Lessay. Everything and more included to enjoy a stay in a self catering property with a sense of home from home. Rachael and Ray were the perfect hosts leaving us to our own devises but on hand if needed, they left us a lovely arrival hamper of local ingredients and a very informative newsletter of the area. You really do get what is advertised with no surprises. Highly recommended. Response: It was good to meet you. We were so glad you had good weather and were able to make the most of all the area has to offer. Rachel & Ray |

As soon as we drove through the stone walled entrance to Just Couples we knew we would have a tremendous stay. The gite is charming. It's at the far end of a gravel yard down a very quiet lane a couple of kilometres outside a peaceful Norman town. Everything a couple would need for a great holiday was provided (from the practical, such as a kitchen stocked with every utensil you could need, to the intangible, namely the warmth of the welcome and sense of tranquility). There was a brilliant welcome-basket which Rachel and Ray had filled with everyhting one needs to kick off the holiday. It included many wonderful local goodies such as cheese, butter and milk from the local dairy, local artisanale cider, biscuits, chocloate, tea, coffee...). This really was home from home. A high point was Rachel's cooking, which we treated ourselves to on two occasions during the week, but it could easily have been for every meal! Rachel uses her own veg from their land at the back and is very knowledgeable on the local produce. All of it is prepared with panache and served in the gite. This really is the best of both worlds - someone else cooking up amazing fare but served in your "own" home! There is a well-stocked selection of DVDs and a good selection of books, maps, guides and leaflets from local attractions (of which there are MANY!). If that wasn't enough, Rachel and Ray as locals know what should be seen and where, down to local markets, which beaches are the best and even if it is high or low tide. You really will want for nothing if you stay here. It is remarkably peaceful, but the town is a very short drive (or indeed eminently cyclable) in order to stock up on food. You will be assured of unobtrusive, friendly and genuine hospitality from two people who you know care deeply about the quality of what they provide and for the enjoyment of their guests. Response: It is lovely to know our gite was 'Just Perfect' thank you very much for the wonderful review. Rachel & Ray |

"Thank you so much for another fantastic week! This was our third visit to stay in 'Just Couples' and once again it never disappoints! The cycle routes through the local forest are excellent well worth cycling through the 'sentier de decoverte' in the evening to see the birds, buzzards and deer!
As always Rachel's food is amazing. we would drive and sail all the way here just for the one meal!....especially the pork and fennel. We will be back again as this is our favourite house and 'get away spot' we have been too! Jordan and Samantha - March 2011
