The Aegean Islands region
Archeologaical findings on Lesvos show that the island was inhabitated from early antiquity due to its fertile hinterland and it's adventurous geographical position. the first organised communities developed about four thousand years ago and soon enough trading began with Asia Minor, other islands of the Ageamn Sea and the wider Greek area. The nature and position of thr island often made it a target for the powers of thiose times, but also cintributed to the development of a particularly distinguished civilisation marked by Sappho, Arion, Pittacus, Alcaeus, terpandrus, Theophrastus and numerous poets, writers and philosophers.
Today the island has started to turn from the somewhat reliance on the unstable production of olives and towards tourism and the immediate needs to develop its infrastructure, helped by Greece's accession to the EC. olive oil, cheese and ouzo are still produced locally and oare of a very high quality.
Lesbos / Lesvos Island / Molivos area
Molivos is situated at the bottom tip of Lesvos and is arguably the most beautiful village on the island. It's picturesque harbour is dominated byy the castle and tiers of red tiled stone houses climb up the slopes away from the beautifully blue sea. At night the flood lit castle turns the harbour into one of the most romantic places on earth and there are a number of restaurants in the village centre that are ideal for quiet meals for two.
During the Middle ages Mithymna took on the name of Molivos which roughly translates to 'Mountain of olives' and has been popular with visitors and tourists alike since 1960. Every year a significant number of cultural events and conferences, both national and international are held in Molivos.
The area is also famed for it's art exhibitions, lectures, theatrical performances and folklore events are he;lp in the town.
Local trades include fishermen, olive culturation, cattle breeding and hearding as well as agricultural farming.
