The Aegean Islands region
Situated in the Northern Aegean Sea and near the coast of Turkey the Island of Lesbos is the third largest greek island but it is mostly untouched by mass tourism. With a rich and varied collection of natural and historic attractions this is one of the few parts of Greece where you can still experience Greece as it really is and not as it is packaged by the holiday companies. Fantastic beaches, wonderful landscapes, a rich and varied history with plenty to see make this a great place to take a holiday.
The island has an abundance of pretty little villages with picturesque harbours and unspoilt vistas. Famous for its sardines and the main producer of ouzo in Greece, Lesbos is a great place for those who love good food and authentic greek cuisine. With hot summers but a milder climate then the more southerly islands it has an average temperature in the mid twenties in May rising to the low thirties in August. The island's volcanic past have left it with an interesting geology and plenty of Hot Springs and Pools which have been used for centuries by both inhabitants and travellers to soothe their aches and pains and cure a variety of ailments.
For those interested in history there is plenty to see, with archaeological sites dating back to the times of Ancient Greece and Rome, through to the Venetians and Ottomans. There are great castles to visit, ancient churches with wall paintings dating back as far as the 13th century and several museums and art galleries with impressive collections, including the Teriade Gallery which houses works by many modern masters such as Matisse, Picasso, Chagall and Miro to mention but a few. Mytilene town is dominated by its castle and the ancient greek amphitheatre of the city inspired Pompey to build the 'Theatre of Pompey' the principal monument of Rome. The town of Molivos is also dominated by its castle standing proud above the town as it drops dramatically down to the sea. Built on the same site as that invaded by Achilles, the great hero of the Trojan War, on his way to Troy this town is well worth a visit during your stay on the island.
For nature lovers the island has an abundance of treasures to explore with more varieties of birdlife and wild flowers than almost anywhere else in Europe and over 70 species of wild orchids alone. Mountains covered in forests of pine as well as oak, chestnut and plane trees, lush green valleys, wetlands and salt marshes make up just some of the natural beauties of the island. A stopover point for many migrating birds including many Wetland species, Warblers, Passerines and Waders including flocks of the Greater Flamingos are just some of the the birds you can expect to see. There are also various Eagles, Falcons and Crakes and if your lucky and know where to look you may spot one of the many rare species frequenting the island during migration. The spring season is also a great time to visit for those who enjoy walking and rambling as the island is at its most beautiful and dramatic at the time. Lush, green valleys explode colour due to the abundance and variety of the wild flowers native to the island, many of them rare and protected and some of which you will find no where else in the world.
With such rich and varied natural habitats, Lesvos is home for many small creatures amongst which are foxes, squirrels, birds, reptiles, bats and insects. Some of them are found nowhere else and a few are listed as endangered by the European Union. Several species of bat are included in the list of protected fauna along with turtles, reptiles and birds. Local authorities are working under the European Union's directives on conservation of natural habitats to ensure that rare flora and fauna are protected.Working under the Natura 2000 project, areas of particular interest have been protected and efforts are being made to protect habitat types as well rare species.
A natural paradise that has been kept secret by those in the know, Lesvos will enchant everyone who ventures out to touch it. Isn't it time you discovered it too?
Lesbos / Lesvos Island
The village of Skala Eressos is located on one of the most beautiful and relaxed resorts on the island. It is set in a lush valley surrounded by volcanic hills and the south facing sandy beach, which stretches out for 3 km and is perfect for sun worshippers!! The village is located at one end and there is a nudist area approximately half way along. The size of the beach mean that it is almost always possible to find a quiet spot to relax on except maybe for high season but even then it is never over crowded. Families tend to use the area of the beach nearest the village where there are sun beds for rent and water sports facilities.
Families have the chance to spend quality time together relaxing, playing, eating and passing the time in a pleasant and simple environment. The lack of facilities that you would normally find in most holiday resorts means that children spend a lot more time being creative and spending time with their parents and each other. The village also attracts people interested in spirituality with a varied collection of workshops and courses offered in the surrounding area. Creativity is also encouraged and there are many people interested in, and teaching various creative arts and skills living in the village or nearby through the summer.
The atmospheric traffic-free broad walk of the village, with a row of bars and restaurants located at the waters edge is an idyllic setting offering traditional and modern dining overlooking the sea. Whether you are having pre dinner cocktails while you watch the sunset or enjoying a fresh fish meze with some local ouzo, you cannot help but relax and chill out to the sound of the waves gently caressing the beach.
