The Rhone/French Alps region
The Savoie (Savoy) department is situated in the Northern Alps region. It covers an area of over 6,000 km2 much of which is mountainous. With a great number of world class ski resorts and many areas yet to be explored.
Many ski resorts in the French Alps offer dedicated snow parks, half-pipes, specialist schools and board hire for the growing number of snowboarders who are attracted by the superb snow conditions. Additionally, French ski resorts are often joined to form large ski circuits with a wide variety of pistes that make for a memorable complete day out for all abilities. Whether you're a novice or a pro you're guaranteed to have an exhilarating French Alps ski holiday. The scenery is breathtaking and serves as the perfect backdrop to your ski escapades.
Les Trois Vallees
"Ski-universe", "Largest integrated skiing area in the world", "Powder paradise"; a small selection of the description used to define the ski region of Les Trois Valées. This extensive ski region, located in Savoie, covers over 600 km of pistes and offers about 200 ski lifts. Due to its high altitude (3200 meters) the ski region is snow certain; from the beginning of May this area is open. Furthermore, also the lifts located on a lower altitude stay open, even during bad weather conditions.
The different villages in the Trois Vallées offer an appropriate accomodation for every budget. There is i.e. the popular Val Thorens, the small-scale and quiet La Tania, the chic Courchevel, the cheaper Les Menuires and the traditional Méribel.
In the Les Trois Vallées ski area you'll also find the largest cable car in the world, which takes you from Courchevel to Le Saulire, to an altitude of 2738 meters. Here you'll mostly find red and black runs. In the funpark there are half-pipes and quarter-pipes for snowboarders and there are plenty of possibilities for off-piste skiing.
The ski area of Les Trois Vallées offers many possibilities, besides skiing and snowboarding. At the villages of Les Menuires, Courchevel and Meribel there are trails for cross-country skiers of all levels. In total there is 118 km of trails. Other possible winter activities include hiking, tobogganing, snowmobile tours or dogsledding.
The village of Les Menuires has completely been renovated for the winter games of 1992. Together with the Saint Martin de Belleville it forms a ski area with 160 km of slopes and offers over 50 lifts. Most lifts go to the Mont de la Chambre and the 3 Marches, from where you can discover the rest of the Trois Vallées. Méribel and Val Thorens are quickly reached from Les Menuires. On the snow-certain north-west slope of the Point de la Masse (2804 meters) there are some very nice and steep slopes for advanced skiers. For snowboarders there is a fun park with half pipes reaching 110 and 400 meters with quarters, tables and moguls.
Les Menuires is known for its relatively low prices. The village in the evening has plenty to do as well as there are a number of bars and nightclubs for après-ski, and there are plenty of restaurants to be found in the village as well. Other facilities in Les Menuires include different type of shops, supermarkets, ski schools, daycare, an indoor swimming pool and a number of wellness and sports facilities.
For cross country skiers there is a 10 km long trail, partly through the forest and partly through open fields to the villages St. Martin de Belleville and Le Chatelard. Above the village there are some practice trails. For hikers Les Menuires offers you approximately 160 km of hiking trails. From Les Menuires you can walk parallel to the Doron creek to some old villages, and snow shoe walks are also organized.
For children there is a separate children's park in in Les Menuires, and there are three small slopes just for sledding. At the mountain station of the Roc des 3 Marches a 3,5 km long toboggan run is situated, named the Roc'n Bob. In the surroundings of Les Menuires you can also take trips by dogsled or snowmobile.

"très beau chalet"

"A nice large chalet, though a little remote from resort centre"
We stayed in Chalet #1 in Feb 2012 when the snow conditions were marvelous. The chalet was plenty large enough for a party of 10 adults and teenagers and the additional space in the basement level was a welcome bonus as were the sauna and boot warmer.
This hamlet of chalets is located in the quiet Preyerand area below the main centre of Les Menuires. There is a narrow piste running above and below the hamlet and if there is good snow cover, it is possible to join these pistes and ski down to lifts that then rise to the main centre at Croisette, otherwise use the ski-bus as the walk is too far. We had a vehicle with us so the location was not an issue, some of our party arrived at the main bust station in Les Menuires and it is too far and too difficult to walk with luggage from there, so either the local ski-bus or a taxi (if available) is a must to get to the accommodation. The nearest minimarket is quite a considerable distance away, so bear that in mind if self-catering. There is a reasonable ski-hire shop and a couple of restaurants and a bakery nearby plus an on-line service that delivers fresh bread & croissants to the chalet door daily.
The chalet we stayed in is no longer in pristine condition but has not deteriorated to an uncomfortable level, there were one or two niggles that we reported on our departure, the main one being the extractor fan in the en-suite on the floor bedroom which ran 24x7!
Overall, the location, size and quality of the chalet suited our requirements and we had a very pleasant stay.
Thanks for your review.
Over the summer we will have a look at the chalet to see how we can upgrade the chalet based on your comment,"The chalet we stayed in is no longer in pristine condition but has not deteriorated to an uncomfortable level".
Thanks again for your reply.
