This is an impressive, natural looking chalet constructed with chunky larch timbers which makes it look like it really belongs in the trees that surround it! It is located just above Les Houches village centre and is only a 5 minute walk to all the local shops, bars and the excellent 'Delice' restaurant. The Chambus also stops here which connects Les Houches to all the other resorts in the Chamonix Valley. The chalet is a 15 minute walk or 2 minute drive from the Bellevue cable car and the foot of the Kandahar piste.

Rocky Mountain has been lovingly created using recycled timber, Australian hardwood and sun bleached driftwood, natural materials that give it a unique rustic character. Original furnishings from all over the world complement the design of the chalet and create a tasteful and homely place to stay. There are lots of comfy sofas and beautiful curtains throughout the chalet. The large kitchen and dining room is fully equipped for preparing and sharing the most delicious dinners. It has a huge deck with beautiful views and a lovely wooden hot tub overlooking the forest. All in all, a very comfortable chalet but not too 'precious' so an ideal place for families and large groups of friends. If you are looking for a 'one off' chalet where you can feel totally relaxed, look no further!

The Rhône-Alpes region

With its variation of individual resorts, the Chamonix Valley opens up an unrivalled choice of skiing for all abilities but is particularly suitable for intermediate and expert skiers with some of the most challenging runs in Europe. Even beginner skiers have the opportunity to ski in the high mountains, amidst scenery on a totally different scale to most other ski resorts, you normally only see that sort of scenery as a climber or mountaineer! The individual ski areas throughout the valley are not interlinked but the short drives between resorts actually add something to your holiday and enable you to fully appreciate this astoundingly beautiful area. A different point to start from each day, a different resort to ski each day and a different but always spectacular view of the Mont Blanc Massif.

During March and April, the Valley provides some of the best off piste skiing and boarding in the Alps. There is the world famous 'Vallée Blanche' to try, a 26km off piste descent from the 'Aiguille du Midi', or the exciting steep powder chutes and snow bowls at Flégère and Brévent. At Les Grands Montets there are some of the best black runs in the Alps and if you ski down from the top lift, (3300m), you drop a vertical distance of 2000m to the bottom of the valley. You can also ski down into Vallorcine and Switzerland from the gentler slopes of Le Tour, which is right at the end of the valley.

Some Extra Activities

Indoor Climbing Wall in Les Houches

Indoor & Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks in Chamonix & Les Houches

Mer de Glace funicular Railway to glacier and ice caves

Aiguille de Midi - Highest Cable Car in Europe (3842m)

30 mins drive to Italy & Switzerland.

Les Houches

Les Houches is the only village ski resort in the Chamonix Valley and has the most pisted runs of all the individual resorts in there. There are stunning views of Mont Blanc and its tumbling glaciers from all around the resort, including from the various mountain restaurants that make superb lunch spots. It is particularly suitable for beginners and intermediates and is very popular with families as it tends to be less busy than many of the other Chamonix resorts with fewer lift queues. It also has a superb choice of great value, flexible ski passes for all, an excellent local ski school and snow sure green runs at the top of both the Prarion and Bellevue lifts.

The nightlife in Les Houches has vastly improved in the last few years with a welcome injection of young entrepreneurs starting up cool bars and restaurants making it an even more attractive resort to base yourself in the Chamonix Valley. There are four main areas for shopping and nightlife, Le Prarion, La Bellevue, Le Centre and St-Antoine, which are all along the main road running through Les Houches.

The Bellevue area is a 5-10 minute walk from the Prarion where you will find the Bellevue Cable Car and just up the road, Cyprien Sports our long standing partner ski hire shop. You can also buy clothes, sunglasses and all sorts of mountain equipment here. There is a tobacconist and gift/card shop, a bakery, a crêperie and tea shop and a very good late night English run bar 'The Slalom' that shows all the televised SKY sporting events including Premiership & Champions League football & Six Nations rugby. The 'Basilic' restaurant offers a varied menu including local specialities while next door at the 'Pull Up' bar you can try flavoured rums and treat everyone to your favourite Karaoke classics!

"Beware - things are not as advertised and poor service"

We stayed at the Rocky Mountain chalet for 9 nights, as a group of 3 families with young children. After reading the other reviews and communicating with the owner, we thought that the chalet would be… More

We were very disappointed to receive such a poor review as most of our guests send us grateful emails after their holidays, particularly commenting on the excellent friendly service they receive. I would like to reassure any future guests that we run three chalets and this is our first bad review (please see properties no. 268726 & no. 268727 on this website). We have been running chalets for over 20 years and pride ourselves on our service but we can understand why in this instance the holiday maker felt that their expectations were not met. Unfortunately the boiler breaking down was not something that we foresaw and we did our best to get it repaired as soon as possible. It is a brand new top of the range boiler, so is not something we would expect to break down.

The guests discovered there was a fault with the boiler when they had no hot water on the Bank Holiday Monday, the fourth day of their holiday. We tried everything we could to find a plumber, our chalet managers even had a go at mending it themselves. Unfortunately this week coincided with the French Bastille Holiday Week and we just could not find any available plumbers. Our two regular plumbers were both on holiday and the other plumbers we tried to contact, via our network of local friends, were also either away or flat out. We finally found a plumber to visit on the Friday before the guests departed and he did manage to fix the problem. In the meantime, as soon as it became obvious that we may not be able to immediately fix the boiler, we arranged with our neighbour (who was away in Switzerland) to allow our guests to use her chalet so they could have some hot showers. We also asked our manager to buy the guests some champagne and arrange for a generous discount off their meal in a local restaurant 'The Jekyll' in Chamonix, where she also worked. We felt we kept the guests updated at all times, we were phoning and texting our managers and plumbers constantly, and I personally spoke to the guests several times to keep them informed of progress and returned any missed calls as we were also away on holiday. Our chalet managers, live right behind the chalet and are always on hand to ensure things run smoothly and resolve any issues as quickly as possible. We certainly do not take these things lightly.

The other couple of things mentioned were the barbeque and hot tub. The chalet has a barbeque built into the rockery off the deck by the hot tub at the rear of the chalet, which is in keeping with the chalet. Guests normally use free wood from our wood pile or they buy their own charcoal. I think in this case perhaps the guests were more used to using a gas barbeque. The hot tub was discovered to have a small leak but this was fixed after two days once we found out what the problem was. We realise that these issues compound together to make the guest feel let down but we must stress that this was not a 'trap' and in any way intentional. We are a small family business who have a very good reputation in the industry and take great pride in the quality of our chalets and holidays.
