Home description
Sechoir a Tabac is our beautiful stone and wooden tobacco drying barn, covered in ancient vines, which has been converted into a stunning four-bedroomed gite. The Sechoir is ideal for a large family or a group of family and friends and a haven for children of all ages. The barn will comfortably accommodate eight guests and we're happy to provide extra beds and/or cots if required.
Outside is a private, fenced garden with a barbecue and a stream running alongside. From here, you have wonderful and unobstructed views along our valley and sixteen acres of private land to explore surrounded by hundreds of acres of woodlands, criss-crossed with many footpaths. A shared 12x6m swimming pool (with a separate children's' paddling pool) is closeby.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Dordogne in SW France is steeped in history, stunningly beautiful, essentially rural and lives life at a slower pace than most. Perigord has been a magnet to visitors and invaders alike for centuries. La Rosiere is situated in the enchanting Vezere Valley, whose caves hold the greatest concentration of prehistoric art on this planet. The gites are close to Les Eyzies in an UNESCO World Heritage site, located in a tranquil valley called the Combe de la Faye (Valley of the Fairies). We are at the end of an isolated track with no immediate neighbours or passing traffic but are still within close proximity for the many and varied local attractions, shops, restaurants and markets. Stunning historic towns and bastides such as Sarlat, Rocamadour and Monpazier are close by and the chateaux and the smaller towns and villages of this fascinating region will not disappoint you. Not to mention the delights of the highly distinctive cuisine and wine.
Les Eyzies area
The Vezere and Beaune rivers meet at Les Eyzies where the bones of our ancient ancestor Cro-Magnon man were found as the local railway station was built in 1868 and archaeological treasure has been discovered here ever since. A small and friendly commune, it comes alive during the summer months, attracting visitors from all over the world. Les Eyzies is the capital of prehistory in the heart of the Perigord Noir, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979 and a wonderful venue for people of all ages and interests. It is rightly called the 'cradle of prehistory' located in a grandiose site of limestone cliffs in the enchanting valley of the River Vezere. The village lis situated under enormous massif rocks on which lie the remains of an imposing 10th century chateau built by the Barons of Beynac. It is the richest area for prehistoric archaeology in the whole of France and a visit to the famous caves and the Musee National de Prehistoire in Les Eyzies is an essential for all visitors.
As well as the archaeological treasures of the area to marvel at, they is much else to see and do. You can be as energetic or as relaxed as you choose. For the active, you can walk, cycle, ride horses, paddle canoes, play tennis, swim in the pools and rivers, walk in the trees ... the more relaxed can take leisure flights in microlites and hot air balloons, visit gardens, museums, markets, towns and villages. And on and on - there is no shortage of entertainment. But, if you are coming to unwind and to watch the world go by, to sit by the pool in the sunshine with a good book and a glass of two of chilled white wine, you can do that too. The Dordogne can be all things to all men, women and children - the big problem is to choose. And a word of warning - many people who come here simply to enjoy a holiday, are so impressed with the region and the way of life that they sometimes end up living here. So be warned!
Although La Rosiere is far from the madding crowd, it's not too far from the outside world for when you need to shop and eat. Les Eyzies (4 km) has a good range of basic food shops plus a small supermarket, information centre, newspaper shop, gift shops, restaurants and cafes and a railway station - Eyzies market day is Monday. Le Bugue (8 km) has pretty much everything you could need including several supermarkets, wide range of shops, information centre, wine cave, restaurants and cafes - plus the best market cafe for coffee, croissants and people watching that we know. Here you will also find doctors, dentists etc. Bugue has market days on Tuesday and Saturday. St Cyprien (11 km) has good shops and a terrific Sunday market - our local favourite. Spread your net a little further and you will find a wide variety of small towns and villages with everything you could possibly need.
