"Lovely cottage, very noisy road"
There are quite a few positives to this cottage. It is set in a lovely courtyard, shared with the other two cottages but still manages to feel private. The garden is huge, perfect for our two young bo… More
We are sorry that despite the many positive comments in this guest review their personal opinion was that the holiday home location did not live up to their expectations.
In all honestly we are completely mystified by the feedback as my husband saw the guests each day of their stay and they only mentioned the noise once on the Monday when they advised they would be leaving on the Thursday as they had been away for nearly 3 weeks and wanted to get home as the children were in school on the Monday and also they had had a very busy summer leading up to participation in the Commonwealth games. Additionally the comment about the noise was accompanied by the guest's own admission that ' we are probably over sensitive to road noise as we live way out in the sticks'
The property is next to the road as we detail on the website but this a 200 year old property with solid external stone walls 20 “ thick. All the internal walls are soundproofed with acoustic plasterboard, the ceilings have been lowered and double lagged for additional sound insulation, the windows and doors are double glazed and the living area of the property is below road level.
Background noise level is subjective and it must be accepted that tolerance will vary from individual to individual.
The comment that the traffic is 'constant and relentless' is completely untrue.
There is increased traffic movement during the morning and evening 'rush' hour – bear in mind when I say 'rush' hour this is a D road and in rural France – but don't take our word for it if you log on to Google Earth it very clearly shows the volume of traffic passing the house and by no stretch of the imagination could you agree with those comments. During the evening and at night there is very little traffic and this is supported by guest reviews saying what a good nights sleep they had and how very peaceful it is.
In response to the decibel rating comment – we completed the same exercise in the 2 bedrooms and the living area over a 1 hour period during different times of day ie morning, afternoon and evening. The highest reading was in the back bedroom during the morning when the noise peaked twice during the hour at 57 decibels. Taken in context this is 26 decibels lower than the reading claimed by the guest and 8 decibels lower than normal conversation and lasts for 2 seconds repeated twice in 1 hour, not quite the relentless noise suggested.

"A magical holiday"
We were looking forward to visiting the Dordogne and where we chose to stay was the icing on the cake.
La Fenil was charming. The gite was clean and tidy and very well equipped. A home from home.
The owners were very attentive and the welcome pack was a nice touch.
There was plenty of parking space and it was, just a short walk into the village
This was our first time taking a Gite holiday we'll definitely be going back.

La Fenil - the cottage was delightful, it was a great welcome and retreat after a long journey through France. Thank you for the Welcome pack, all the little things of comfort provided are great. Fabulous base to explore the amazing region and the caves. You must visit Sarlat but after seeing other areas I am now convinced that La Fenil was just the right place to be - thank you. Will recommend and will return but next time for 2 weeks. All creature comforts catered for and wonderful gardens to unwind in. We loved the pool.

We are sorry that the guests who posted this review felt that our holiday home did not live up to their expectations and we respect people have their personal opinions.
We work very hard throughout the year to try and ensure that all the houses and extensive gardens are maintained to the highest standard that we can achieve and their comments are disappointing as this is one of the first negative feedback we have received in the 4 years of owning the gites.
However I think it important to balance their comments with fact, feedback and accurate information as we did with the review posted by the other family members in La Maison Bleu.
The Games room is not on the drive but next to the hard standing area where guests car's can be parked – it is sited here slightly away from all the gites, to ensure the noise is restricted for guests without children staying at our properties but also within easy access for all of the gites if required. It is safe, dry and spacious with good lighting.
The patio's for all the houses are arranged in such away to afford privacy to all guests – which is important when you have un-associated parties staying in the properties. The patio for La Fenil is outside the front of the gite in the courtyard. Property is on the road and obviously there will be some road noise in the courtyard as in other areas of the site but we have had no other issues with this situation from any of the guests who have stayed here.
As I mentioned in the response to the other family member review in regard to the road - there is a map on each website we advertise and on the front page of our own website showing the siting of the house directly on the A47 into Les Eyzies - there is no suggestion given or implied that the property is in the middle of a field.
With regard to the settee, the unit was new this year, there have been no animals in La Fenil at all, we had 11 different sets of guests staying in La Fenil prior to and following this guests visit in 2013 and no one reported any issues with smell from the settee, we provided Fabreze and did everything possible, to try to rectify the situation to their satisfaction.
The comment related to the property manager needs to be put into context – this reponse was related to a request to change the sofa and quite rightly they advised 'they were not the owner and could not make this decision'.
We have received great reviews all documented and available for reference over the past 4 seasons including 2013 with regard to the standard of the gites, the cleanliness but additionally great feedback about the level of service and support locally.
From 2014 we are living in the area so we will be available 24/7 to assist and support our guests personally.
Re the problem with the Wi Fi – All the he properties have walls which are more than 12” thick and made of stone. Free Wi-Fi is offered as a service for our guests but reception is better in some areas than others – we do detail this fact in our information packs and are looking at installing a booster for 2014.
