This spacious and comfortable 4 bed house with private swimming pool is situated on grounds of approximately 2 acres in a tranquil wooded setting above the pretty riverside village of Les Eyzies in the SW Dordogne (Dept 24) with shops, restaurants, post office, ATMs, supermarket and more to cater for all your daily needs, as well as pre-historic caves, a museum and information centre, small railway station and pony riding, canoe and bike hire.
Built on 3 levels, the large 'L' shaped lounge and dining room, kitchen, one double bedroom, bathroom and a WC are reached by steps to the front of the property (access without steps to this level is also available to the rear).
The top floor is reached by a traditional wooden staircase, leading to three bedrooms, a shower room and separate WC. The stunning master bedroom has a fabulous super-king-sized white French bed and matching furniture. There is also a large bedroom with a double bed and single bed, and a smaller bedroom with sturdy 3ft single bunk beds. On the large landing there is a day bed (suitable for a child). Travel cots (2) can be provided, as well as a small musical baby chair and mat, highchairs (2), travel bath and baby monitor, bottle steriliser and soft toys.
The kitchen cupboards are stocked with utensils for indoor and outdoor living, with fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, oven, hob, microwave, juicer, toaster, cafetiere, iron & board, etc.
There is a lovely modern bathroom adjacent to the double bedroom downstairs with a Victorian white suite, slipper bath and wet area with rainshower.
Outside, you can step down to the pool via feature balustrade steps or step under a pretty rustic wooden honeysuckle filled pergola. The pool's Roman end steps make it easy to enter and return to your sunbed and parasol after a cooling swim! The top terrace has a large wooden table and chairs shaded by an elegant curtained pergola, and there is a large stone BBQ for al fresco dining.
At the front doors the covered top terrace is perfect for relaxing at the little table and chairs, and watching the distant sunsets, experiencing the sights and sounds of the local wildlife, and star gazing.
For your safety and comfort while climbing the steps to the front doors at night we have installed sensor lighting to the front of the property. There is also timed lighting to the front gates.
This year we have added a feature area to the pool terrace with an ornamental fountain and plants. There is also effective in-ground lighting around the pool and within the garden, all remotely controlled, making the garden more enjoyable for warm summer evenings by the pool.

"Excellent holiday rental in amazing area!!
Date of Stay 04 September 2012
We have just returned from a lovely week in this beautiful property. Everything about this stay was better than we expected. The house itself is beautifully furnished and it is equipped to a very high standard with everything that you could possibly need, especially if staying with a young family. We had very warm weather during our stay, and we especially enjoyed the lovely pool area at the rear of the property. The pool has an alarm which provided us with some peace of mind with our 2 year old. The owners have a number of bird feeders in the gardens, and it was a delight to watch the finches, tits and nuthatches come and go, and try to spot the woodpecker that was heard but never seen (binos supplied). There are also deer in the area that were often seen around dusk. A lovely night-time activity was to sit in the rear garden and look up at the amazing starlit sky in the light pollution free environment. It occurred to us that the house is also very well set up to entertain guests who are less fortunate with the weather with a pool table, darts, board games, 50" TV with UK channels, playstation, books etc. The property provides the perfect base from which to explore the Dordogne area, and there is an abundance of things to do and see in the locality for young and old. It is situated near the village of Les Eyzies which is within comfortable walking distance. It has some very nice restaurants! I would have no hesitation in recommending this holiday rental to anyone! "

The property stands prominently in the middle of approximately 2 acres including a small wood, in a most tranquil sunny spot above the bustling village of Les Eyzies. The property and gardens are not overlooked - the neighbouring properties are far away enough to allow complete privacy. The front top terrace, which overlooks a large flowerbed, is a perfect place to sit and enjoy a glass or two of wine with good company! From here you can spot several species of birds, and sometimes deer, and hear the nearby donkeys calling! The rear garden has terraces by the pool for relaxation, with tables and chairs, parasols and sunbeds, all in extensive grounds giving a feeling of calm freedom, and complete relaxation.
Also to the rear the private rectangular swimming pool has Roman end steps making it comfortable to enter, and an alarm for your safety. Please bring your own towels for the swimming pool, as these are not provided!!
The general area around the property is tranquil and very wooded. The large drive can accommodate several cars and the exterior of the house is well lit with automatic sensor lighting for your safety at night.
The house and gardens are a peaceful haven to return after your busy day exploring this fascinating area, and the village with its various shops and 12 restaurants, supermarket with petrol station, post office and 2 cash dispensers etc for your convenience is not far away!
Suitable for families/friends, either with or without children/babies. 2 babies can be catered for as we have 2 highchairs and 2 travel cots.
Suitable for people with restricted mobility, but not all areas are wheelchair accessible, however the main living floor (lounge/dining room, kitchen, lobby, and one double bedroom with bathroom) can be reached via the rear door. (Please contact us for further details and to discuss requirements if necessary).
Sorry, no pets are allowed.
No smoking is permitted anywhere inside the house, out of respect for the owners, and guests who do not smoke.
Please note:- the minimum stay is one week. Changeover day is Saturday (unless alternative arrangements are made with the owners' consent).

The Dordogne region
The Dordogne is like a warm and sunny version of the English Cotswolds with pretty honey coloured houses dotted among rolling green fields and woods. It's full of very old villages, castles, small country market towns and wide rivers, with plenty of opportunity for relaxing in the sunshine. The lovely old city of Perigueux is the Dordogne's capital.
The south east is famous for delicious walnuts, truffles and fois gras. At the centre is the medieval town of Sarlat. The rivers Dordogne and Vezere dominate, surrounded by limestone cliffs, castles and picturesque villages such as Domme and Castelnaud, and importantly its world-famous caves with their prehistoric paintings such as those at Font de Gaume, Les Eyzies and Lascaux near Montignac. There are also plenty of beautiful crystal grottos, and also 'Prehistoparc', a prehistoric theme park to visit. Le Perigord Noir is full of stunning scenery, and there is always a warm welcome wherever you go.
Les Eyzies, the centre of pre-history and a UNESCO world heritage site, is close to the medieval town of Sarlat in the Dordogne, SW France and under an hour from Bergerac and Brive airports. If you are fascinated by pre-history, a visit to the museum along the main road is a must. Tickets to the many attractions of the area can be bought at the PIP centre, and children can attend workshops where they re-create original tools used by pre-historic man. Font de Gaume is just up the road, and the site of the discovery of Cro Magnon man within awesome cliffs dominates the main thoroughfare.
Many of the rock formations in the area contain caves which were occupied by pre-historic man, and some were also used in the medieval period. Les Eyzies is a fairly compact riverside town, buzzing with visitors in high summer, and there are plenty of interesting shops, launderette, a small supermarket, various lively restaurants serving excellent lunches and yummy food served at gastro-restaurants - we can recommend the romantic Vieux de Moulin, a converted watermill in lovely grounds. The super-wide River Vezere runs through the village, and is a lovely spot for a picnic and lazy riverside walks. You can canoe from here, and paddle past some of the most stunning scenery in the area. The little railway station runs trains to and from, amongst other places, Perigeux.
There are wooded lanes and plenty of open spaces if you enjoy cycling and walking, (cycle hire nearby) and plenty of pretty market towns and attractions to keep children amused are near. Pony riding, guided walks to nearby pre-historic sites and fishing are available, and a golf course is within reach. The nearest towns (Le Bugue and St Cyprien) with larger supermarkets, and several shops, markets etc are approximately 15 minutes' drive away.
If you like Les Eyzies and its pre-history you will love visiting the nearby famous Lascaux cave paintings at Montignac and the many fascinating grottos, huge rivers and beautiful historical chateaux of the whole area. Traditional French villages, truffles, fois gras, a relaxed pace of living away from the hustle and bustle with plenty of beautiful sunny days and stunning scenery make this area a wonderful holiday destination.
L'Etangs du Bos in nearby Audrix is a leisure park with a lake, water slides and play equipment, and plenty of open space for a picnic - a great day out for the family. Go in the direction of Le Bugue and you'll soon see signs!
There is also a young children's leisure park (Jacou) approximately 25 minutes away, past Le Bugue on the road to St Alvere.
The pretty village of Campagne is approximately 10 minutes' drive away. There is a lovely chateau here, and some pretty restaurants. The bigger market town of Le Bugue is approx 5 minutes further on. The grotte of Le Sorcier can be found at St Cirq, signed just before reaching Le Bugue.
St Cyprien (with a large Carrefour supermarket) is approximately 7 km away just outside the village on the way to Sarlat - worth a visit, with spectacular views along the road as you drive in. There is a poney club to the right en-route and further along is the pretty artists village of Meyrals.
