The Swiss Alps / Vaud/Lake Geneva/Swiss Alps region
This area of the Swiss Alps is one of the world's most popular destinations for keen skiers - which should come as no surprise, given the quality of the slopes, the easy access from Geneva and major European cities such as London, Paris and Dusseldorf, and the wide range of cultural and entertainment activities available for after hours.
Les Diablerets is located in the heart of the Vaud Alps, a short distance from Geneva and the famous ski centre of Gstaad.
Les Diablerets area
Les Diablerets is, along with Davos, one of the oldest ski resorts in Switzerland. It dates back to 1756, and from its birth the resort has enjoyed strong links with Britain - during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was a popular destination for the cream of the English aristocracy. The first hotel in Les Diablerets, with 300 rooms, was built in the eighteenth century specifically for English guests. Since then, the resort has become more cosmopolitan, attracting visitors from all of the world including such luminaries as Victor Hugo, Lenin, Napoleon III and Igor Stravinsky, not to mention present-day legends such as Clint Eastwood and Paul Newman. However, Les Diablerets is still very popular with English visitors, and there is a sizeable British community in the village.
As far as skiing and other winter sports are concerned, Les Diablerets has something for everyone. Slopes range from the family-friendly blue piste to the challenging Glacier 3000, as well as a network of cross-country ski trails, a 7.2km toboggan run, dog-sled riding, and the famous "bus de neige" (like water-skiing, but being pulled on skis behind a horse!) Les Diablerets is a very friendly resort suitable for all the family.
One of the attractions of Les Diablerets is that there's also plenty to do beyond the slops. The village boasts an indoor swimming pool and tennis courts, while there are 3 golf courses within a 15 km radius. For those of a more cultural persuasion, the annual Classical Music Festival takes place between December and march and attracts top-class performers from as far afield as Russia, while another event well worth attending is the Mountain Film Festival, which showcases films about mountain themes from all around the world.
