The Rhone / French Alps / Isere region
The Rhone is one of the major rivers of Europe, originating in Switzerland and running from there through the south-eastern corner of France. Near its mouth, the river divides into two branches, known as the Great Rhone ( and the Little Rhone.
Isère features many ski resorts, including the Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes. It also hosts Coupe Icare, an annual festival of free flight, such as paragliding and hang-gliding, held at the world-renowned paragliding site at Lumbin.
Les Deux Alpes area
The world no longer looks the same from the top of the Glacier des 2 Alpes, with Mont-Blanc and the Aiguilles d’Arves on one side and La Meije on the other.
Les 2 Alpes, an international winter and summer sports resort, offers mountain-lovers a huge playground, with Europe's biggest glacier and more than 40 sports and cultural activities for the whole family.
An encounter with nature: - High-altitude hikes on the glaciers (3,200-3,568 m) for a breathtaking view of the Alps, Vercors and Oisans. - Visit to the ice cave 30 m beneath the glacier, illustrating mountain professions of bygone days. - "La Croisière Blanche" excursion: a hike to the "Dôme de la Lauze" (3,568 m) on Europe's biggest glacier. - “Les Crêtes” and "Pied Moutet" (2,100 m) to see the resort from above, as well as the Vénéon and Romanche Valleys.
How to get there
BY CAR:
A480 motorway to Grenoble, exit 8 (Briançon, Vizille, Stations de l’Oisans), then the RN91 towards Briançon via Le Bourg d’Oisans. At the Chambon dam, take the D213 on the right (Grenoble Les 2 Alpes: 70 km, around 1 hr).
