The Rhone/French Alps region

Situated between Paris and the Côte d’Azur, on the border with both Switzerland and Italy, and offering access to two international airports (Lyon and Geneva), impressive rail connections and a vast motorway network, the Rhône-Alpes region is at "the crossroads of Europe".

Boasting eight natural parks and peerless sites such as Mont Blanc and the Gorges de l’Ardèche, the Rhône-Alpes offers a wide range of different landscapes: mountains, vineyards and gentle valleys, fields of lavender and olive groves.

Every form of sport is readily available, set against an impressive natural backdrop: skiing, hiking, mountain biking or even paragliding and canoeing. Besides hosting three Winter Olympics games due to its being the largest ski area in the world[citation needed], the Rhône-Alpes is the second most important golfing region in France with over 60 courses.

Enthusiasts of art and culture will not be disappointed by the region’s Villes d’Art: Lyon, which is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, Annecy, Grenoble, Chambéry, and Saint-Étienne.

And last but not least, connoisseurs of good food and wine will be spoilt for choice by the range of local specialties available to taste along with a Beaujolais or a Côtes du Rhône, and by the sheer number of famous restaurants (with Paul Bocuse at the top of the list) in the region

Les Contamines-Montjoie

Les Contamines -Montjoie is a genuine savoyarde village that is alive in both summer and winter. The ski area has 120km of pistes which is complimented by the St Gervais/Megeve area which has a further 350 km, both areas which are not linked to Contamines can be skied with the evaison lift pass. Les Contamines also encompasses a floodlit international standard half pipe, a huge cross country skiing area with biathlon range, an ice rink and ice climbing wall and to top it off endless opportunities for off piste and ski touring, so you will never be bored! However if on a rare occasion you wish to explore other ski resorts the skiers ultimate playground of Chamonix lies under an hours drive away, the resorts of Flaine and Portes Du Soliel also are within an hours drive.

For the more relaxed skier there is a wide selection of mountain restaurants where one can enjoy fabulous food with an equally fabulous view.

For those not seeking fast and furious powder skiing horse drawn sleigh rides or snowshoeing are a wonderful way to take in the dramatic scenery and abundant wildlife. A visit to the Baroque church at Notre dame de la Gorge or the equally beautiful church in the village is a very worthwhile walk.

Summer in Les Contamines offers just as much as winter with gloriously hot sunshine and green meadows replacing the winter wonderland.

Walking, climbing, mountain biking, white water rafting, paragliding are all available within a short distance to people of all abilities. The famous Tour Mont Blanc (a classic walk around Mont blanc visiting 3 countries 120km in length) passes through the village. The variety of walking is limitless from a 2hour walk to a 2 day walk with masses in between. The lifts open in summer to take walkers and mountain bikers up into the mountains.

The leisure Park (5min walk away) offers days of fun with the swimming lake, golf driving range, 8 Tennis courts, fishing lake, pedalos and aerial assault course.

All year round the village has a fine selection of restaurants serving local savoyarde dishes and very high standard French cuisine. If you wish to order in a takeaway a pizzeria and several other food outlets do takeaway in one form or another.

"I'll be back"

I have stayed in a large number of ski apartments with my family. This one has to rate as one of the best I have stayed in. OK - It is small, but the space is well utilised. Very reasonably priced in comparison to the big name ski areas. It was spotless on arrival and the owner had given us good instructions on everything from getting the electricity and water working to the best place to hire equipment. Ski hire and wifi pub are less than a minute away. Gondola to ski area is maybe 3 minutes in ski boots. Owner was very easy to deal with, very flexible and helpful.
Maybe not relevant to the apartment review, but the Les Contamines ski area is excellent. Everyone will find a skiing challenge, something the TO's seem to have missed, so you can get a lift to a bunny slope or a steep black mogul run without having to queue for more that a few seconds.
Overall - excellent, clean, well priced apartment in a very good resort. Can't fault it on anything....

I should add - soundproofing was first rate. Most of the week we thought we were the only people in the building.

"Small but perfectly formed"

This apartment is not large, but if you're skiing all day then it's more than enough for a party of 4. It's within a 5 min walk to the lifts, the bars are close by, as are all the shops you need (ski hire is dead opposite) next to the bakers and supermarket. Everything you need for a comfortable week - we were really pleased with how convenient everything was. All you need is snow!
