The Shetland Islands region

Shetland is located when Scotland meets Scandinavia and the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Most famous for its ponies, distinctive “Fair Isle” knitting patterns and Viking links. Visit Shetland at any time of year and you'll be enchanted by the rugged beauty of the landscape, its dramatic changing colours and textures will take your breath away.

The bustling archipelago of 22,500 people boasts abundant wildlife, a spectacular coastline and dozens of major archaeological sites. Whether arriving for the first time of returning, you can be sure of a great welcome.

Shetland lies 600 miles (960km) north of London. More than 100 islands, just 15 of them inhabited, span the 100 miles (145km) between Fair isle and Out Stack, the northernmost point in Britain.

Because the Shetland Island's are so far north, from mid-May to mid-July, the “simmer dim” (summer twilight) when the sun only dips below the horizon for a few hours. In fine weather this can brings the islands almost 19 hours of sunshine a day. In the winter and spring months Shetland is an ideal place to view the magnificant Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

Brekka Lodge is located just 10 minutes from Lerwick, the capital of Shetland. Based between the hamlets of Fladdabister and Ocraquoy, Brekka Lodge has stunning unspoilt sea views and all the peace and quiet you require. An ideal central base for exploring the whole of Shetland.

The peaceful location of the property ensures you the freedom and space to ensure an wonderful holiday. Ideal for couples, singles, families, young or old.

For those with young children we provide a highchair, travel cot, stairgate and a toy box free of charge. Brekka Lodge is sited away from the road to ensure safety and there is a large lawn for picnicing, playing football, kite flying or sun batheing should the weather permit.

Brekka Lodge visitors boast about the nature on the doorstep, with the beaches, coastline and loch being firm favourites. The nearest beach is only a 2 minute walk from the Lodge and the next one is only 4 minutes away! Watch gannets diving for fish from the lounge window! You may even be lucky enough to spot the local shy otter who has been seen two feet from the property and often on the shoreline below the house.

Should the weather be poor there are games, free wifi, dvds and books provided for your enjoyment. However, Shetland also has much to offer with a network of leisure centres, heritage centres and the recently opened award winning museum in Lerwick, to name a few things to do on a wet day. Check out the comprehensive information pack and Shetland books in the accommodation for other suggestions.

Activities on the doorstep include bird watching, loch and sea fishing and peaceful coastal and hill walks. Brekka Lodge is on the Fladdabister circular walk route. Within 10 minutes on foot you will find amazing:

- plants and flowers;

- wildlife;

- birds;

- sea mammals;

- geological delights;

- shingle beaches;

- rock pools;

- walks;

- lime kilns;

- ruins; and much, much more

....... an explorer's paradise!

"We love Brekka Lodge!"

The Brekka Lodge is so wonderful in every way. Firstly, Sheila is extremely kind and helped us very much from the day we arrived. Secondly, it is a beautiful and immaculate lodge, equipped with everything one may need. It felt like our own home, even nicer :-) We enjoyed our stay so much and will definitely come back. The surrounding is so beautiful, giving lovely views from the large windows in the living room. We walked around each afternoon, met two seals at the beach by the lodge, and enjoyed various beautiful landscapes. Last but not least, we very much appreciated the welcome package (the chocolate cakes are to die for).

Thank you for your very kind review. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome such a lovely couple to Brekka Lodge. We very much hope we get to meet you again in the future. Kind regards to you both.

"Excellent accommodation, well equipped and very relaxing stay."

We had a really lovely week at Brekka Lodge. The house itself was very comfortable, warm and well equipped.

Spotted a pod of Minkie whales heading south down along the coast from the living room! (Well, ok … with binoculars!)

Would recommend Brekka to anyone looking for self-catering in Shetland.

Thank you for the review. It was a pleasure having you to stay and really pleased that you saw the Minkie whales.

"Immaculate, well situated and superbly furnished/fitted"

Brekka lodge has everything you would find at home, and more. The kitchen was extremely well kitted out, everywhere was impressively clean and tidy, and the sight of oyster-catchers feeding on the lawn outside the window (plus you own 'personal' beach) made the location perfect for us.

Thank you for your review and we were pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Brekka Lodge.

"Beautifuuly fitted and maintained in a peaceful setting"

We heartily recommend Brekka Lodge. We have very high standards of cleanliness and organisation in rented properties, and being light sleepers we cannot tolerate noise and traffic, so this was ideal for us.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay at Brekka Lodge.
