About the home
Our village house has been renovated and modernised as a comfortable home for entertaining and relaxing. With very thick walls, the house stays comfortable on even the hottest days and the fireplace in the living room provides a cosy gathering place on chilly evenings. The kitchen/dining room is the centre of activity and opens on to the terrace for alfresco dining and easy access to the barbecue corner. The garden is enclosed by tall crumbly stone walls giving it lots of character and privacy. The bedrooms are comfortable and quiet and lovely to wake to the sound of birds in the garden or the soft chiming of the village church bells. Leran is 10 minutes from Mirepoix, a charming medieval town, and about 30 minutes from Carcassonne which is one of the must sees in the area. There is a lot to do in the area from swimming, sailing, canoeing and horseback riding at Lac du Montbel; or hiking and exploring the Cathar ruins and towns - and white water rafting and skiing close by.

The Midi-Pyrenees / Ariege region

Carcassone is a must see Cathar stronghold with much history and a fortified castle with it's "pepper pot" towers overlooking the main town. La Cite is a maze of cobbled streets with shops and cafes, a museum and the castle itself.
The Corbieres/Limoux is, a great drive with vineyards for wine tasting/buying.
Foix, the capital of the Ariege has a beautiful castle and a stunning light/music festival in July. There is a good market, cobbled streets to wander, and views from the castle. There are caves to explore nearby at Niaux, Bedeilhac and Lombrives.
Mont d’Olmes provides good family skiing, nearby Ax serves up more technically challenging pistes and the vast domains of Andorra are less than 75km away.
Andorra, a 90 min beautiful mountain drive to duty free shopping, with the ruin of Chateau Montsegur on the way.
The Mediterranean beaches (Narbonne, Perpignan, Coulliere) are about 2 hours east of Leran and the Atlantic beaches (Biarritz, Arascon) are about 2 hours west of Leran.
There are 2 golf courses within an hour away, one near Carcassone and one near Foix.

Leran is a small village 5 minutes from Lac du Montbel with swimming, sailing, fishing, horseback riding, bicycling, canoeing, and cafe available. The Tour de France passes through in July.
In Leran there is a boulangerie 5 doors down from the house, and a small bar/cafe, Le Rendezvous, with very good food and entertainment with both English and French spoken. Leran has a medieval festival in August and July through August every Friday night there is a fun street party with food, drink, music, and dancing attended by both french and expat locals and visitors. The Tour de France goes right by in July!
Mirepoix, 10 mins, is a beautiful medieval village with shops, cafes, supermarkets, petrol station, and a fabulous farmers market on Mondays and a smaller one on Thursdays.
Lavalanet, 10 mins, shops, cafes, petrol, a small hospital; and a big farmers market on Fridays.
Near Leran on the main road is a Go-karting place.
Brocante: there are several small brocante in Mirepoix, a large one on the way out of Mirepoix towards Pamiers; there is a large one past the hospital in Lavalanet; and another large one in Pamiers past the Le Clerc supermarket.
Pamiers has a selection of shops at the roundabout where the MacDonalds is, and also in the centreville.

We had a fantastic time at La Maison du Jardin Secret which really does have a secret garden! We loved the garden and spent a lot of time there just relaxing, eating and drinking. The house is spacious, very well equipped and in a great location for the Lac du Montbel, the Cathar castles such as Montsegur and lovely towns like Foix, Mirepoix and Carcassonne. The house is also close to Andorra and the Pyrenees. Leran itself has a great bar and restaurant where we enjoyed several meals. We will definitely be back. |

Very helpful owner, very pleased with service and accommodation. Le Jardin Secret is an old townhouse in a traditional village with restaurants and summer gourmand street markets (great fun!). Nearby freshwater lake for swimming and boating is a real advantage - lots of room to swim in relatively warm water. Bakery a few steps away for morning croissants and good bar/restaurant down the road. House looks small and a little unprepossessing on the outside but extends back to provide excellent space. Beautifully appointed inside with all mod cons including a super kitchen and bathroom. Lovingly decorated. Good-sized bedrooms and new comfortable beds. Secluded garden with shaded areas for relaxing and dining. Village clock a little manic with chimes, but typical of the region. Double glazed windows are effective if you want to sleep in! Location of village is easy for travelling on quiet roads. This is an unspoilt area of France, and not touristy, but there are some interesting places within easy drive through stunning countryside. We had a great holiday as a family with our two adult children (19 and 21) ut house would be good for younger families as the garden is enclosed. |
Guestbook for La Maison du Jardin Secret
"Thank you Susan - we had a lovely time in your beautiful house and enjoyed outdoor breakfasts and dinners in the garden which you must have spent a lot of time in to make it such a haven of calm and beauty. We loved the village with its bakery and cafe. We went for walks and bicycled to the lake where we had a nice lunch at the cafe. We visited the "bastides" and since we are interested in history it was fascinating to follow in the paths of the "cathars". We really enjoyed our stay and would like to come back some time."
"Just to let you know we had a great time staying in your lovely house, and will not hesitate to recommend it to friends coming to France. It was a great base for exploring the surrounding area. (as well as having the best shower in 8 weeks!)"
"The house was perfect and exceeded all our expectations - I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation and in fact you will be having my cousin in September."
"We have just left Leran - what a lovely place and area. The house was perfect. We had a great week and feel like there are so many things that we didn't get a chance to do - though the main thing is it was so relaxing."
