The Peloponnese region
One of the south Mediterranean's best-kept secrets - Kardamili is a beautiful seaside village located in the Mani, a stunning region in the southern Peloponnese. Set dramatically against a backdrop of aqua-blue waters, majestic cypress trees, olive groves and snowcapped mountains, it is one of the prettiest of villages that overlook the calm seas and splendid sunsets of the Messinian Gulf.
3 hours and 30 minutes' drive from either the capital of Athens or the port of Patras, and just 35 km from the nearby city of Kalamata, it remains one of the south Mediterranean's best-kept secrets: an exclusive, small, unspoilt resort with traditional stone architecture, lush gardens, a picturesque harbour and fantastic beaches.
It offers something for everyone - The village caters to many tastes. It is a favourite summer haunt of families and couples alike, but also of yachters and trend-setters who are into new and undiscovered European holiday destinations, as well as a cultural and social hub for foreigners from all corners of the globe. This extended international community also includes renowned actors, artists, musicians, philosophers, scientists and writers. Visitors come for romantic week-end breaks, friendly get-togethers and memorable family/group vacations. Inspiring, unique and welcoming, Kardamili is both an ideal place for holidays and a special retreat for long relaxing spells.
Kardamili offers several lovely beaches and is only a ten minute drive from the sandy beaches of Stoupa.
Place of interest:
Caves of Diros - 10 km south of Areopolis are the famous Diros Caves. They are part of an underground river that flows out into the surrounding sea, and their natural beauty is fascinating. From the entrance, gondoliers steer small boats through narrow passageways around beautiful stalactites and stalagmites whose colours, enhanced by the surrounding lights and waters, are spectacular. The caves were inhabited from 4800 to 3200 BC, serving as places of worship in Paleolithic and Neolithic times, but the life of the community was interrupted abruptly by a severe earthquake in about 3200 BC: the mouth of the cave was blocked and those trapped inside died of starvation; those who escaped abandoned the area because they had lost their supply of drinking water. First explored in 1950 – and the archaeological research that followed brought to light important findings dating from Neolithic times – they are nowadays a major tourist attraction, visited by thousands of travellers each year. Diros also has a museum where the original findings are stored on display: artifacts and perfectly preserved human skeletons.
Mistra - It has been suggested that the castle, churches, monasteries and palace of Mistra are the Eighth Wonder of the World. Mistra was a fortified town in Morea (the old Peloponnese), situated on a steep hillside of the Taygetos, lying approximately 8 km west of the modern town of Sparta. After the conquest of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade, Prince Guillaume II de Villehardouin lived at its palaces from 1249. Mistra however grew prosperous after 1261, when it became the second most important city in the Byzantine Empire after Constantinople and the palace became the second residence of the emperors. Mistra was also the last centre of Byzantine scholarship: neo platonist scholars based in the city greatly influenced the Italian Renaissance. The Venetians eventually occupied it from 1687 to 1715, and then the Ottomans held it until 1832, when it was finally abandoned by King Otto for the newly rebuilt Sparta. In 1989, the ruins, including the palace, fortress, churches, and monasteries, were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Viros Gorge is described as a sublime experience. Descending from the peak of Profitis Ilias (Taygetos summit), it unwinds into the seas of Kardamili Bay and, though the gorge is usually bone dry in the summer, its river in full spate is reported to be awesome in winter. There are numerous beautiful things to see on this hike: caves, cliffs, monasteries full of frescoes and, of course, wild life. Setting off from Kardamili, the Viros river bed soon narrows into a classic gorge; after a kilometre or so this opens out into a verdant valley. Paths lead off to the right (towards Aghia Sofia), but the real jewel of the Gorge is hidden in the trees to the left: the monastery of Lykaki whose interior is delectable. This church was built in 1570 but the frescoes date from 1783. The church is in a parlous state, but inside the frescoes inside are vivid and in an almost complete state.

"A beautifull quiet place with a nice swimmingpool for a relaxed time on the Peloponnesos"
For one week we stayed in appartement Gaja with our teenage daughter. It was a beautiful place, not big but very comfortable. The swimmingpool was lovely clean and fresh. We had a nice place outside for meals, but we could sit on different places around the house and near the pool. Mary and John are very welcoming people who were always available for help or advice. My daughter and I did a mosaic course given by Marie and we had a lot of fun making our own mosaic. We also likes the small kittens they were so sweet. Kardamili is a nice little town near by the Olive Grove and the beaches are also near by. Yes, we had an unforgettable week in the Olive Grove.

"Magnificent quiet location with spectacular views and outstanding hospitality!"
Our stay at The Olive Grove exceeded our expectations. The location is quiet, peaceful, and the perfect place to relax without the hustle and bustle of the "tourist crowd". The property is extremely well taken care of, and the amenities in the bungalows include everything and anything you could wish for. The owners, Marie and John went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable, even going as far as installing additional wifi coverage so I was able to do work sitting under the olive trees by the pool. The view of the ocean and the surrounding area is gorgeous, particularly at sun set when the sea glitters and sparkles against the onsetting dusk. The Mosaic Studio on the premises provides a lovely creative outlet for anybody who has ever wanted to try their hand at art, or for experienced artists looking to unfold and expand their inner creativity. We plan to visit the Olive Grove often. It's a haven for those who want peace, tranquility, and exceptional service and a feeling of "family". Thanks Marie and John for a terrific time! We will be back!

"Possibly our most relaxing holiday ever"
For our first holiday in over 20 years without having our children with us we were looking for something a little different. We wanted somewhere where we could properly relax, and do our own thing at our own pace, and The Olive Grove didn't disappoint.
From our first arrival we were met and welcomed by Marie and shown around our villa which was thoughtfully and tastefully appointed. We were lucky enough to be staying in Electra which probably has the best position to enjoy the fabulous sunset views across the Messinian Bay every evening, but all the villas were finished to the same standard.
The owners have done a fantastic job of blending the villas and facilities into the landscape, and retaining a number of olive trees around the pool provided the perfect escape from the sun when required.
John and Marie were the perfect hosts, the villas are maintained to an impeccable standard, and the whole site was kept spotlessly clean throughout our stay. Nothing was too much trouble and they even lent us sunbeds, parasol, and a pair of Crocs for the days we went to the beach! Nothing was too much trouble.
We would recommend the Mosaic courses, we originally booked up for a couple of afternoons as a bit of a break from the sun, but with Maries tuition we were able to produce a couple of really pleasing pieces of work, whilst having a fun relaxing time.
Kardamili itself is charming, a fantastic selection of cafes, bars and restaurants to cater for all tastes (well almost, thankfully not an English pub to be found!)
We would thoroughly recommend the Olive Grove and we will be back!

"A slice of Greek Paradise"
We would agree wholeheartedly with all the very complimentary comments about The Olive Grove.
Our perfect hosts, John and Marie, were so welcoming and helpful? They provided local recommendations, guide books and even snorkels to add to the enjoyment of our holiday.
A sign down in the village giving directions to The Olive Grove would be very helpful.
The villa was beautifully furnished and very well equipped and we LOVED the mosaics.
October is a wonderful time to visit the area - the weather was perfect and not too hot, the sea was warm and incredibly clear and the whole area was very quiet.
We would love to return!

"Gorgeous. Three cheers to Yannis and Marie."
Our stay at the Olive Grove was one of the most memorable from our many visits to Greece. The villa with its amazing view across the Messinian Gulf is designed with chic and modern in mind. Well equipped and tastefully furnished it is set amidst a most tranquil olive grove situated only a five minute drive from the very quaint and traditional village of Kardamyli. Our hosts gave us a warm welcome and were available whenever needed to advise or assist with local information and ideas for exploring the area. The time passed all too quickly but will be remembered always and definitely deserves a return visit.

"a truly relaxing week"
We had a wonderful week at The Olive Grove. The accommodation was first class and John and Marie were excellent hosts, on hand to sort out very patiently late at night the one problem we had with the accommodation but also very much in the background leaving us to enjoy the pool, the quality of the accommodation and the daily ritual of sitting on the balcony watching a spectacular sunset. All in all we made the most of The Olive Grove to ensure we had a very relaxing break.
I would recommend the half-day mosaic course run by Marie at The Olive Grove on the basis that if we could turn out a recognisable product in half a day then the tuition must be very good - which it was. Kardamyli is a delightful sea-side village and we did our best to try out a number of the cafes and restaurants and enjoyed some delicious fresh food.

"Beautifully designed villa with stunning views and warm welcome"
We were excited to find The Olive Grove online and our expectations were exceeded on arrival and throughout our stay!
John and Marie gave us a very warm welcome, having stocked our fridge with the few essential items (including some delicious organic red wine!) we had asked them to buy for us in advance due to our late arrival. They remained on hand to provide information and offers of help, whilst always respecting our privacy and leaving us to enjoy the lovely pool when we were around the villa during the day.
The villas are brand new, light, bright and tastefully decorated in sunny colours and with pretty mosaics created by the family. This gives them a character that is hard to find in a holiday villa and makes them feel very homely. They are very well equipped for self-catering with new appliances and high quality utensils and crockery. The patio doors at each end of the first floor villas allow addictive views of the mountains on one side and over the turquoise sea on the other - we spent a lot of time just gazing outside in the sunny mornings!
The Olive Grove's position on a hill above Kardamili means that you need a car to go and explore the nearby beaches during the day, but also gives you the feeling of really getting away from it all (and did we mention the views?!). The uphill walk from Kardamili to the property took us around 30 minutes and we did it twice during our week's stay, during the evening when it was cooler.
We had one of our best ever holidays at The Olive Grove and we hope to return; although we suspect we'll have to book much further in advance once the secret gets out!

"It doesn't get any better than this!"
We've stayed at the olive grove for 10 days.
words cannot describe the time we had.
John and Marie, the hosts, went far and beyond to satisfy all our needs.
The place is amazing, designed beautifully, comfortable and very clean.
The apartment is big and has a great view, the pool is just fantastic, and the whole complex and location is unbeatable.
If you are looking for peace, quiet, family time and great stay, this is the place for you.
We will definitely come back as soon as we can.

"A blissful week at The Olive Grove-can't recommend enough!"
We have just returned from a wonderful stay at The Olive Grove and we have nothing but praise! The apartment was spotless-modern in design and with everything you could need for self-catering. Some of the owner's mosaic art work is displayed around the complex and it is beautiful-complimenting the surroundings entirely. The pool is a refreshing treat in the heat and the garden area is really pretty-it truly is an olive grove! In fact, we were kindly given some olives and oil on arrival and they were delicious. They are a short drive from Kardimili-a picturesque Greek town by the sea with plenty of lovely cafes and tavernas to choose from. Marie and John live on site but are the perfect hosts-available for advice and anything you should need but very discreet-they couldn't have been more welcoming. I also did a half day mosaic workshop with Marie and am totally inspired, it was great! All in all, a fabulous holiday in a wonderful setting-we hope to be back and will be telling friends and family to go too!

"The olive grove is a place where beauty combines with tranquility and hospitability."
Our two weeks at the Olive Grove count as one of the better holidays of our lives. It lies nestled against the backdrop of the soft mountains of the region and from our generous balcony we had a view over the pool, garden and beyond the sea. The accomodation was thoughtfully planned with an eye on clear lines and beauty. There was a personal feeling to the interior of the villa, which made us feel at home immediately. Outside the garden and the pool were excellent, with plenty of sunbeds and places to sit. Shade was provided by umbrellas and olive trees. All exuded an atmosphere of calm and care. Everything was well cared for. The villa, the garden, the pool and last but certainly not least we as guests. We were welcomed with great warmth and kindness. Our hosts were generous beyond the call of duty and were always available to provide us with information and tips. The entire experience we want to repeat again and again.
