Enquire nowThe Peloponnese region
The Mani region of the Peloponnese being the most Southerly part of mainland Europe, boasts a warm climate whilst remaining lush - fed throughout the winter and spring by streams running off the towering Taygetos mountains, a backdrop to this area. The summer is long and hot continuing until October, followed by a warm autumn, ideal for walking. Spring is a walkers paradise, Olive groves and mountain meadows covered with a carpet of wild flowers.
The Byzantine monuments and the churches are worth a visit. In the Mani there are also some of the most impressive, prehistoric caves. Local olive oil and honey are of excellent quality, while the coast is dotted with sandy and pebble beaches and lovely tavernas offering good food made from local produce.
In the mountains and coastal regions you can find charming villages where you can spend hours lapping up the atmosphere, finding a surprise round every corner.
It is a distinct place with legends and traditions.
The area is amongst the richest in ancient myths and archaeological sites including ancient Olympia, site of the original Olympic games and because of it's remoteness throughout history the area has retained its natural charm without the impact of tourism that has affected so many other once beautiful places.
The Lefktron / Stoupa area
The Pyrgos / Stoupa Area has a diverse countryside, with a rich mix of beaches, harbours, olive groves and villages surrounded by impressive mountains and Mediterranean blue sea. It is an oasis untouched by the current troubles where it seems that time has stood still.
Pyrgos
This village goes back to the 1400s and has the most magnificent view of the sea and coast from its perch on a hill top plateaux. The very name "Pyrgos' meaning 'Tower' adds to ones imagination of the views it provides. The local cafe in the square is an ideal place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere of this enchanting village of cobbled alleyways. A must is a drive around the mountain villages behind Pyrgos. They are a step back in time with some glorious byzantine churches and chapels, and of course some good old fashioned hospitality - or simply walk out of the door at Casa Sophia and enjoy a quiet walk out into the countryside to absorb the beauty of the area.
Stoupa
Here you will find all the amenities you will need. Shopping, gift shops and many traditional tavernas and bars encircling a beautiful sandy beach. Swimming here will suit all levels of bathers.
Agios Nikolaos
Idyllic little harbour, where you can dream the afternoon away watching the local fishing boats and the local life. It also provides a lovely setting for an evening meal with a variety of tavernas, bars and coffee shops. You can also walk the 20mins along the coast to a lovely tree covered local beach bar and beach. Ideal for those who seek more solitude.
Kardamili
This coastal village has a more sophisticated edge with many shops, bars, wine bars and tavernas. Some located overlooking the sea and harbour. Fabulous for a meal out in the evening to enjoy the truly wonderful sunsets. It is also the start and finish for some magnificent walks. Not to be missed is a visit to the museum in the partally ruined old Kardamiili, only 2 mins walk from the main village.
Walking
This area is also a walker's paradise. Climb upto monastries, and chapels in the mountains or follow the many gorges that lace this part of Greece. Many of the walking routes follow the ancient kalderimis (donkey trails) that have laced this area for centuries.
Day Trips
This area has a wealth of ancient sites. Some a mere hour away.
Mystras
The fortified village of Mystras is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ancient Messini
Some say is more beautiful than Olympia
Sparta
The setting for so many tales. The '300' brave warriors who defended Greece against the Persians.
Monemvasia
'The Gibraltar of the East'. Where 'The Guns of Navarone' was filmed (1961).
The Diros Caves
Take a journey by boat through underwater caves, once occupied in the Prehistoric times and delight in what nature can sculpture.
